Ok so this is my first time writing something like this so please don’t flag me. I’ve been trying on several months to secure FT position or an internship with meaningful work that’ll lead to something. But I haven’t been too successful in getting interviews or even the good ol’ informational interviews.
But I know that a lot of folks here on WSO are fortunate enough to have secured a position. Now I’d like to ask, bear with me, if anyone who lives in the NYC area would be willing to go out for a cup of coffee or lunch (it’s all on me) to discuss on how I can better strategize my job search. Perhaps you could look over my resume? Give me some pointers on what steps I should take? Think of it as an informational interview. I’m trying to break into IB or PE, or perhaps even the hedge fund industry.
Now it may be odd as to why I’m not requesting this to be over the phone. But I prefer speaking to someone in person instead. Heck, we could have some lunch in midtown if you'd like. I’d like to speak with anyone, from analysts to managing directors.

What's your background?
I graduated with a degree in economics amongst the top of my class. Had a prior internship in wealth/asset management. Awesome excel skills and communication abilities because I worked in retail for several years. I'm interning at a boutique IB where the MD has me doing cold calling and data entry all day. I don't mind doing it, but I'd like some more exposure to other business areas

What type of role are you looking for?
I'm looking for an analyst role within IB,PE or HF. Learning different types of financial modeling or even investment management techniques. If an analyst position isn't available I wouldn't mind doing an internship. I need to get my foot in the door, so to speak, and get some good exposure.
What school/kind of school did you go to? Target? Non-target? Does it have a career service you are actively using (does it have one that it would be beneficial to actively use?)
My school is non-target for finance at least. It's focused upon engineering. For those that know NYC, its a CUNY school. The career service center for majors outside of engineering is laughable, they help very little to none.

I know the schools, and unfortunately agree that (as you already know) they won't be much help. I can't personally help because my experience isn't too relevant- I'm a university student in the Southern hemisphere going into IB in my home country this December, but I have spent ~2 years of my UG in the US so am familiar with the industry and recruiting, schools etc here. Putting that out there because I don't want to accidentally get your hopes up (in case you thought I was someone who could reach out to help in a significant way). I can perhaps try and offer some more general advice- starting with this: have you tried posting your resume on WSO (anonymously)? I think that you may get a better response, at least when it comes to resume review, on here rather than asking someone to do it in person.
Although your current internship sounds non-IB related (in terms of the work you're doing) is your firm able to help in any way? Have you asked for advice there?
The firm is very small and doesn't get too many deals. Which is why I'm there to cold call for them to get prospects. I've asked for different types of work but haven't received anything.
Wait - so if you end up at a no-name low tier boutique IB, even as an analyst - would your job responsibility be cold calling or doing a ton of data entry? (aka developing no skills)
I am guessing that moving from a small boutique to a BB IBD is almost impossible then
