To b school or to Lateral?

Worked in IB covering HC, left to take a break and work for a Data science HC startup which has been good experience for the past year but have some regrets about leaving Banking. Had A2A but wanted a change to do something entrepreneurial. Feeling like I should’ve stayed in Banking miss working on transactions. Feeling a little too old to come back as a senior analyst or associate not sure if they’d give me an associate role if I’ve been out of banking for over a year. Highly considering the school to reset. Would it be worth going to b school or navigating the lateral market? I’d also like the option of MM PE.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, your situation is not uncommon, and both options—business school (b-school) and navigating the lateral market—have their merits depending on your long-term goals. Here's a breakdown to help you decide:

1. Business School (B-School)

  • Pros:
    • A top MBA program can serve as a "reset button," allowing you to rebrand yourself and re-enter investment banking (IB) or pivot to middle-market private equity (MM PE).
    • It provides access to structured recruiting pipelines for IB, PE, and other finance roles.
    • You'll gain a strong network, which can be invaluable for career transitions.
    • If you're targeting MM PE, many firms recruit post-MBA associates directly from top programs.
  • Cons:

    • It's a significant time and financial investment (2 years and ~$200K+ in tuition and opportunity cost).
    • You'll need to ensure you get into a top-tier program (e.g., HSW, T15) to maximize your chances of landing your desired role.
  • When to Choose B-School:

    • If you feel your current experience at the data science HC startup has created a gap in your IB/PE trajectory that’s hard to bridge through lateral hiring.
    • If you want to explore other career options beyond IB/PE or build a broader skill set.

2. Navigating the Lateral Market

  • Pros:
    • You can potentially re-enter IB faster without the time and cost of an MBA.
    • Your healthcare (HC) coverage experience and entrepreneurial stint at the startup could be appealing to firms looking for diverse skill sets.
    • The lateral market, while challenging, can still offer opportunities, especially if you leverage your network effectively.
  • Cons:

    • The lateral market is currently tough, as noted in WSO threads, and being out of banking for over a year might make it harder to secure an associate role.
    • You may need to start at a slightly lower level (e.g., senior analyst or junior associate), which could feel like a step back.
  • When to Choose the Lateral Market:

    • If you’re confident in your ability to network aggressively and position your unique experience as a value-add to IB teams.
    • If you want to avoid the time and cost of an MBA and are okay with potentially starting at a slightly lower level.

3. Key Considerations for MM PE

  • If MM PE is your ultimate goal, both paths can work:
    • B-School Route: Many MM PE firms recruit post-MBA associates, so a top MBA program could position you well.
    • Lateral Route: Re-entering IB and gaining a few years of deal experience could also make you competitive for MM PE roles, though it might take longer.

Recommendation:

If you’re feeling "too old" to come back as a senior analyst or associate and want a clean slate, b-school might be the better option. It provides a structured path back into IB or MM PE and allows you to rebrand yourself. However, if you’re eager to return to transactions quickly and are willing to hustle in the lateral market, that could also work—just be prepared for a potentially tougher road.

Ultimately, the decision depends on your risk tolerance, financial situation, and how much time you’re willing to invest in your career reset.
