Traveling for Work

What firms in the space tend to travel more than others? Which firms would most likely make you travel internationally a lot? Was looking at firms that have offices in both NYC and LDN for a chance to get exposure to both cities.

Used to love traveling work and thought it was so cool to fly first class / stay at 5 star hotels, but it gets old super fast… annoying to travel when you have a ton of work. Basically takes longer to do everything from a laptop or travel set up

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding travel expectations for different firms:

Firms with Heavy Travel:

  1. MBB Firms (McKinsey, BCG, Bain)

    • Travel is a significant part of the job, often requiring weekly flights to client sites.
    • McKinsey NA considers the continent broadly as 'one office,' making it easy to get staffed far and wide, including cross-country travel.
    • BCG tends to staff more regionally but still involves substantial travel.
  2. Investment Banking

    • Travel can be frequent, especially for client meetings and deal negotiations.
    • Analysts and associates may have last-minute travel requirements, including international flights.

Firms with Lower Travel:

  1. LEK Consulting
    • Known for lower travel requirements compared to other consulting firms.

International Travel:

  1. Firms with International Platforms
    • Many people work on international deals and manage money globally from HQs in major cities like NYC, LDN, LA, SF, CHI, HK.
    • These roles often involve international business travel, including off-hour phone calls and occasional trips abroad.

Firms with Offices in Both NYC and LDN:

  1. Major Investment Banks and Consulting Firms
    • Many have offices in both NYC and LDN, providing opportunities for exposure to both cities.
    • Examples include Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, McKinsey, BCG, and Bain.

Considerations:

  • Travel Intensity: NYC to Chicago is different from NYC to Dubai, and the intensity of travel can vary significantly.
  • Personal Preferences: If you dislike traveling, consider firms with lower travel requirements or specific roles that minimize travel.
