Trying to land a job at GS or UBS

I am in the process of applying to Goldman Sachs and UBS for a summer analyst job, I am currently a senior at an accredited state university that not many people have heard of (Nicholls State). I am a double major(accounting and finance) that maintains a 3.93 GPA. Do you think being in a school that not many people have heard of will hinder my chances vs. someone of similar credentials at a more popular university? I am also involved in 3 honor societies while I'm working at a financial advisory firm and that's about it for my extracurricular activities.

For all the guys who love to look at details and not the topic at hand, this is a forum that I typed in about 15 seconds, not an essay.

Thanks for the real responses guys.

Isn't this the second Nicholls State post in a couple days? Probably not GS (that doesn't mean not possible, just a long shot). Network and apply for these position. Nothing is impossible. Just realize you are up against people with 3.9's from top universities with the same stats as you have. Can you differentiate yourself?

Just apply. I mentioned in the other post you made how I know an analyst at GS who went to a non ivy no name school. It comes down to networking and preparation. Does coming from a school very few people have heard of make it harder? Yes. Do you have a lot of competition at GS? Yes. Why not look at Boutique or MMKT banks? Great way to get experience and then move to GS later on possibly. Once you start working for a couple years people will focus on what you have accomplished instead of where you went to school.

depends on the division - IBD or S&T would be one hell of a long shot unless you have some serious connections. as mentioned, everyone applying for those positions are going to be from top 10 schools with 3.5+ GPAs, 1400+ SATs, and previous internships, so you probably won't even get looked at if you're applying online.

might be better to apply to their compliance/risk/IT/ops/etc divisions, then apply front office at less selective firms. then you'll at least have a brand name on your resume if you can't get an IB/S&T internship, which helps. i had similar credentials at a non-target without campus recruiting and got a goldman MO/risk-management internship; not FO, but goes to show it's not impossible. people actually knew of my school though, and i've honestly never heard of nicholls. just be prepared to explain why you went there if you're apparently smart enough to get a 3.9 as a double major, and have high SATs/ACTs.

I agree with others. GS and UBS have almost nothing in common. GS is the absolute best IBD. UBS is probably the worst in terms of doing very poorly and declining rapidly. Most people do GS/JPM/MS. You should apply to every bank but applying to just two random ones makes no sense.

Unless you think GS is your 1st pick and UBS is a backup or something, but with your stats I don't think you'll get either. I doubt you'll even get the no name boutiques since your first post was atrocious in grammar and spelling.

Honestly, applying through the websites with your stats you probably will get nothing. Thats just the way this game works. Even though you have a 3.9+ GPA, someone with a 3.4 from UPenn is much more likely to get an interview at either of these places.

Sorry to say it but you only really have one hope... network your ass off and hope someone likes you enough to push your "accredited" resume through to HR, but even then it is probably still a longshot. But hey, if you get the interview and nail it, you can still get the offer. The first step of getting it will be extremely difficult though, especially at a place like GS... lower your goals/expectations. You need to be realistic.
