Want to be a fund manager

Hello everyone, I feel in need of advice!

For a while, I have been interested in a fund management career. I have no direct experience and I am in my 40s.

I worked in the securities industry many years ago. I started by doing equity research translating (mostly about individual companies) for a few years. I also did a few years in an equity strategist-type research role, covering both micro (=company and sector) and macro (=overall market and macroeconomic) market trends.

I also passed level 2 of the CFA exam last year.

I would be grateful to anyone who can give me constructive advice on how to enter the profession, as recruitment agencies are not helpful unless you have 5 years experience and a Harvard degree! Also, these positions are rarely advertised.

For example:

1) Are people known to build up experience by offering to work for free or at a very low salary? Has anyone done this?

2) Are there any investment management contests run by financial companies or other organizations that are open to the public? Maybe participating in them could be a way to show the skills and initiative that I think I have?

3) Have people been known to gather experience by working for a charity or non-profit, for example?

I look forward to hearing your advice, everyone!

if your talking about individual stock picking, your chances of jumping straight into a fund manager role is .00000000000001 %. Having no fundamental equity research experience would make it hard enough to even break in at the analyst level. I would do a search for "private banking" on this website. Given your background likely a much better role to shoot for.

Here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, you are the sucker.
