What criteria do you use to pick a job?
Hello,
This is my first post here. So a little bit of context. I am currently an Economics graduate student (MSc) and as time progresses I am becoming increasingly uncertain about the type of career that I'd like to pursue. During the first year of my undergraduate studies I was dead-set on wanting to do IB, mostly because I was drawn by the possibility of making money and being successful. But after having done an internship in M&A (non-BB), I found the job kind of boring and I also realized that even if you do IB, the chances of making a ridiculous amount of money are still slim.
My recent academic experiences have involved a lot of math (like pure math where you have definitions, propositions, theorems, proofs) and I realized that I really love theoretical math (though I can't say I'm excessively good at it - I'd say I'm above average, but nothing special). I'm not sure where I'm going here, but basically what I want to say is that I realized that money shouldn't really be the only consideration (though it definitely is one) when picking a career. It seems to me that you can't really plan on being ridiculously rich (with this I intend a net worth of 50 MM +) because the chances of that happening are extremely slim (probably less than 0.01%). So with these new ideas in mind, I'm not really sure what I want to do. If I could go back in time I'd probably enroll in a math degree. But I can't, and so I'm quite lost.
My question: what are your criteria for choosing a job? So far what I think is important: money (enough so that you don't have financial problems), actually liking the job, building important skills (I think this is especially important for someone in their early 20s like myself). Any other ideas?
I'm not sure if this post is entirely relevant to where I'm posting it, so I apologize if that's the case.
