What to do for the next 6-8 months?
Hi folks, I have been offered a deferred role at a MF PE - I have about 6-8 months to join. Was looking for advice / ideas on what I can do during this time. Few things that are in the back of my head -
- Travel - maybe for a month cumulatively
- Learn modelling / concepts that will help me in my next job
- Don’t want to continue doing consulting - feel like that will be a total waste of this golden opportunity
- Pick up a hobby - language / instrument
- Learn more about personal finances - will have less time to dedicatedly focus once job starts
- Take GMAT - just in case I decide to apply to business school post the 2 year stint
- Start thinking about ideas for a new venture - start networking with people to get ideas
What else can I do? And how should I prioritise? Any input would be helpful. Thanks!
Importantly...what does the MF assume you'll be doing in the interim? If they're implicitly assuming that you'll still be working and gaining more experience (sounds like consulting), you should be cautious in making a change, and I'd suggest flagging to them if you plan to leave your current gig more than 1-2 months prior to joining the new fund.
Take the GMAT and cool it a bit in your job to enjoy what life has to offer. Do not quit, they will pull your offer
Agree with above - these deferred start dates are not given as an all-clear for you to leave your role next week.
Unless you've worked it out with your next firm agreeing to have such a huge gap, you are typically expected to continue at your current firm until the normal end date. They don't like when people take these massive breaks (1-2 months is normal starting as a PE ASO) because you get a bit rusty / get out of the swing of working - 6-8 months is a massive gap.
Since you're a consultant, learn how to model during some free time at your job, take GMAT if you want to. Plan a fun trip and some decompression time for the break time between this job ending and the new one starting.
Any free resources you recommend to learn how to model?
