Where to go from here?

Hey monkeys - current sophomore at a non-/semi-target. Some quick stuff:

  • 3.6 gpa (had some mental health stuff tank my first semester)
  • Current intern at a local boutique specializing in tech (8 months in role, received return offer for this fall)
  • Applied pretty much to everything the day it opened, including diversity

As it stands now, I have nothing for Summer 2024 and 2025. I am waiting to hear back from another small HF regarding this summer but not sure how likely a position is from that front. My networking fell off after picking up both school + work, especially once recruiting came in full swing, so I am planning on getting back into that this summer. Besides continuing my interview prep and networking, what more should / could I do at this stage to land an offer? Feeling pretty hopeless after sending in tons of apps over the last 4 months.

Hey there! It sounds like you've been juggling quite a bit and doing a commendable job at it, especially with maintaining a solid GPA and securing an internship with a return offer. Here's a tailored strategy based on the most helpful WSO content to boost your chances for Summer 2024 and 2025:

  1. Leverage Your Current Internship: Given your current role at a boutique specializing in tech, make the most of it. Seek out additional responsibilities, learn as much as possible, and build strong relationships with your colleagues. These connections can be invaluable for future opportunities and references.

  2. Revitalize Your Networking Efforts: Based on insights from the WSO Networking Guide, start by reconnecting with previous contacts and updating them on your progress and aspirations. Then, expand your network by reaching out to alumni from your school working in your target firms or industries. Remember, networking is about building genuine relationships, so focus on learning from the people you connect with rather than immediately seeking job opportunities.

  3. Tailor Your Applications: Customize your resume and cover letter for each application to highlight the most relevant experiences and skills for the role. Use your internship experience to demonstrate your interest and capabilities in the tech sector, which can be a strong selling point.

  4. Seek Feedback and Improve: Based on previous WSO threads, reaching out to professionals for informational interviews can also be a way to get feedback on your application approach. If you've had interviews but no offers, consider politely asking for feedback to identify areas for improvement.

  5. Consider Alternative Paths: While you're aiming for specific roles, be open to related fields that can serve as stepping stones. Roles in tech companies, startups, or other financial services firms can provide valuable experience and potentially lead to your desired role in the future.

  6. Stay Positive and Persistent: The process can be disheartening at times, but persistence is key. Keep refining your approach, stay informed about the industry, and continue applying. Opportunities can arise unexpectedly, and your preparation will pay off.

  7. Utilize WSO Resources: Don't forget to make use of the WSO Courses and Academy for interview prep, especially for technical interviews and behavioral questions. These resources can give you an edge in the competitive application process.

Remember, every experience is a step forward, and your efforts are building towards your long-term goals. Keep pushing forward, and don't hesitate to lean on the WSO community for support and advice along the way. You've got this!
