Where you live
thick question, but do interviewers take where you live into account, besides bias if they're from there. like if you're from Ohio, you're obviously gonna find a place in the city if accepted to NY position....
however, if you're from say an NJ suburb 30 minutes from the city (short hills area), would they picture you taking company car out there every night and racking up client $$$? or if they need you to come in the office on a weekend for a quick meeting, it would be a hassle relative to people already in the city??
basically, would i benefit if i use my friend's city address for the time being on my resume, so i wouldn't be thought of in the way noted above?
I would assume that your address wouldn't really mean anything to them if your a qualified candidate. If you sell yourself as being hardworking and passionate about the job (which is a given) I think that they would assume you'd make getting to work whenever your needed your top priority. I can't really see you getting dinged because you take the path in.
But if it came down to two kids with the same credentials but one's from jersey the other nyc. I'm not sure.
I was told once by a highly ranked recruiter that it could be to an applicants advantage to already have a NYC address. His reasoning was that like the kid from Ohio (or anywhere outside of the NY area) may not commit if the position is offered to him. To me this never made a whole lot of sense...I guess keep in mind he told me this about two years ago when things were not quite as bad.
I definitely believe where you live affects your job search. If you are in school and going through regular recruitment then not so much. However, if you are applying to jobs online and emailing your resume of course it matters. I took almost a year off after graduating, did some traveling and then started looking for a job. Barely got any interviews (some companies will give you a phone interview like mentioned above if you are really qualified). Then after a few months of no luck, barely any call backs, I just decided to move to a city (I was at home with my parents who live in the middle of nowhere, literally)... Within two weeks I had 6 interviews, all with reputable firms and landed a trading job with a buy side firm within a month. Coincidence? I doubt it.
thanks brahs, confirmed the gut
Also, keep in mind that a lot of financial institutions hire on the fly. If the decide they need someone they will fill that position quick and they will want someone to start immediately.
