Which coverage group to chose?

Currently a sophomore going into through the recruiting season this summer. I recently had a couple of calls with bankers and both of them asked me exactly what industry or coverage group I wanted to work in. The problem is - as a sophomore, I currently have no real experience in any particular industry. How am I supposed to figure out which group I might want to join? I know some banks allow you to lateral and move between groups but for the most part, I heard that your group sticks with you for FT and what industry you worked in is also the type of PE recruiting you will receive.

I thought I would ask because I don't want to potentially chose the wrong group and end up hating it.

Talk about any industries that you have an interest in. Maybe you are a double major in computer science and tech companies interest you. Maybe you saw a cool m&a transaction in the industrials sector and that made you want to look more into it.

If you are talking to a bb guy, don't say that you are interested in both product groups and coverage group. This can be taken as this person is chasing clout and would only want to work in m&a, tmt and levfin.

Also say that at the end of the day you would work for any group that you get placed in and that you would be happy to work for the bank.
