Which offer to accept this summer? MF, HF, or Fed?
I am a current sophomore at a non-target and after a stressful semester prepping for a summer internship, I have been fortunate enough to get a few very intriguing offers:
Mutual fund intern - total assets over $3 billion - opportunity to learn about Asset Management
Small Hedge fund intern - managing $20-50 million - opportunity to learn more about special situations investing & excel skills
Federal Reserve (DC) intern - administrative role, but strong name
If you were in my position, what opportunity would you most likely pursue? If I had to pick an area of finance I am most interested in pursuing I would say private equity or M&A - but still open to all experiences and I want to take the best offer available.
HF
Thank you, any other opinions?
.
I'd take the mutual fund personally. Likely you'll get a broader exposure to investing styles and longer term fundamental analysis, which can be useful for a variety of roles down the road. HF could be fine too but depends how you resonate with the team.
Thank you for your opinion. Any other thoughts??
Mutual fund. A hedge fund of that size isn't going to offer much structure, mentorship, or training, because it's so small. Unless you think that your valuation/write-up/etc skills are solid and you could succeed in a less structured environment, I'd take the MF, because as a sophomore, they probably aren't very strong. If you have specific insight from either the HF or MF that suggests significant buy-in from a senior in terms of training and mentorship, that could change things.
FYI: I interned at a HF 2-4x that size, and it wasn't that great of an experience.
