Why dont they just tell you you didnt get the job???

I am confused and dont really seem to be able to figure this out. I have applied to work for IB in london, i am not in london at present. The job is exaclty the same as the one i did for a number of years....they are looking for a replacement for someone who is leaving in a couple of months time. I had an initial interview with the recruiting manager and it went v well, this was followed by another 3 telephone interview over a period of 2 weeks. I prepared for them, they were very intense and all went over the allocated time....I sent thank you notes and elaborated further on some points. the asked me when can i start, even one of them said i am the ideal candidate because i have the exact experience of what they are looking for. 2 weeks passed and no answer, i called HR to ask and she said they are planning to follow up with the managers....didnt hear anything....called back and the HR lady said they are still interviewing but the next stage would to fly me to london for final round! and then she proceeded to ask me what are my thoughts on the role???? i found this strange! ofcourse i said i am still interested in the role...etc....now it has been a week and havent heard anything! I am actually tired of following up, shall ijust assume that is a NO....well this is for experienced hire, i would have thought they ignored us when we were graduates! but i cant believe they would still do it for experienced hires! i spent so much time and energy preparing for this!!!! what shall i do?
...I think you should relax. Seriously. Based on my experience, the fact that she asked you if you were interested tells me she's gauging your interest because they're interested. However, they need to check your references and other things before they give you the offer (this is the case when you're an internal hire looking to lateral elsewhere in the firm). It usually takes a little over a week during this time of year given HR and many groups tend to be stretched thin (blame the interns and incoming analysts from all the programs).
It sounds like you got it-- unless there are any circumstances that they found that make them hesitant (bad reference, falsifying your resume, etc.).

thank you! i think u are right, i need to forget about it for a while! no there is nothing wrong on my CV and i got on v well with my pervious employer....its just that they have taken long and last week i emailed her and got an out of office reply so i assume she is off and they are streched as you said!

Yeah chillax lady, they wouldn't have given you four interview if they didn't think you were hot stuff...
I switched firms around a year ago and the whole process took 3 months before I got their official offer. There can be a lot of obstacles that make these things take forever. Usually it's the constant back and forth between HR and the hiring managers. I wouldn't stress at this point.
People always forget that even though this is one of the more important things going on in YOUR life right now, it is far down the list of the people on the other end of the phone...so just keep that in mind. If you are the most qualified candidate, you will most likely get the job. Best of luck.

I've been in the same spot (apparently they just forgot about me).
But there's one point, you didn't meet with an MD/Partner, you just met the recruiter (This is what is called a fake interview since the recruiter can veto a candidate but cannot hire him).
Someone told you you were his candidate. I've been told that by 3 (of 5) people who interviewed me for a big AM position and still didn't get the job and the recruiter actually called me back to tell me how everyone liked me in the office.
You just have to deal with the fact that someone with more power than the recruiter might be looking for something else.
Just don't quit your job until you have signed a contract with your new employer. IMHO, they just don't want to hire you. This happens
It could be worse, I've actually been told that since I'm the only candidate who approved the psych tests, they need to restart all the hiring process which implies asking you to wait at least one month ... And no, you don't get the job by default.(please do not highjack this thread)
