Wife's personal trainer (ex karate teacher) got me an interview at JPM through his brother .. is this ethical?

so he used to be a karate teacher but gave it up a few years back after he dislocated his shoulder but he's been doing personal training for about 10 years and is quite good i think. we had him over for dinner a couple of times and the wife has been to training camp for 2 weeks earlier this summer. anyway his brother is a VP in the healthcare team here in new york and got me an interview. is this ethical?

I believe it's ethical. The guy knows you, thinks highly of you and recommended you to his brother who got you an interview.

I was in a similar position a couple of years ago. I interned at a PE shop and a partner thought I did a great job so he recommended me to a group head at MS who took me under his wing. I went through the entire interview process like everyone else but suspect that the group head pushed for me to some extent throughout the process. Was this ethical? The PE partner recommended me because of good performance so I don't believe I did anything wrong.

In my opinion, you should leave it to the people working at the company and it will depend on their internal policies. Are they very keen to select people based on recommendations? In that case, only way to get in is to get people to push for you. Are they negative to people getting in through connections? Their decision to make. All you can do is push for getting people to vouch for you. If it's not in line with their company policy to do so, they can always say no and that is their responsibility, not yours.
