Will Working at a Casino Ruin a Finance Career?

Hello everyone,

I won't bore you with a long story of explaining my situation and how I got into the mess I am in...My big question is...If you would like to make a career in finance, will working at a casino look bad on a resume or possibly ruin your career? I had two previous assignments that lasted six months and both were decent entry level finance positions coming out of college, however I am concerned that working at a casino as a Cage Cashier for a year or so would mess up my career. And yes, I have a very good excuse why I am in the situation that I am almost forced to do so just to get by. Thank you everyone for your feedback.

Not a big deal as long as you have a legitimate reason. It actually could be a differentiator that could work out to your advantage. It will give you an opportunity to talk about what your situation is. I think a lot of people on here go overboard on having the ideal path, which is not required in the majority of jobs people on here are seeking.

make it part of your story. if you are otherwise qualified (big if), it will make you stand out. also assumes you had a really good reason

I can't see how it could negatively impact your career or job opportunities.

Like sb and subrosa said, making it part of your story could be a great way to be remembered since most recent grads usually have typical student jobs on their resumes.

I am in my junior year, but I was thinking about doing this internship/part-time job during the school year. Thoughts?

I think it could be a valuable experience, especially given that it is rather novel. However, don't expect to be given a lot of credit for it up front. It is up to you to sell your experience and demonstrate that the things you learned are relevant to finance. Also, if you are going to be pursuing the boutique bank internship at the same time, make sure your grades don't slip.

it doesn't really have anything to do with finance, all you're doing is selling negative expectancy entertainment to suckers. could be fun and produce some interesting stories however. but i'd pass if it's an indian casino. ps lol @ joe cadonk

edit: also there's a fine line to tread here between "casinos bro" street cred and coming off as a degen gambler
