Medicine + Business = what???

Greetings
I am a freshman at UF on the pre med track. All my life I have had the desire to be a doctor, but after being at the University of Florida for nearly two terms, I have been exposed to many careers outside of medicine, but have found that they are still remotely related to a career in healthcare. This has sparked my interest in possibly majoring in finance or economics, a degree track that I never imagined being interested in.

My reason for this interest is this: as much as I love the sciences, and as much as I the idea that being a doctor requires caring for people, healthcare is in fact a business and therefore I want to know more about the interworkings within this sphere of healthcare in addition to the medical side. I will get all the sciences I need doing pre med reqs so I want to explore beyond the the chemistry and biology.

My problem is that my knowledge of business and economics peaks at the high school level. I plan on taking an economics course next semester but I want to learn more so I can define a career path for myself other than becoming a doctor where I can enjoy both business/economics and medicine. A student advisor here at UF recommended me to start here...any information and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Okay... you need to do something very important - decide what side of the line you want to be on. Do you want to practice medicine/be involved in the direct practice of medical services or do you want to engage in something that requires formal Med School training without the need of being a practicing physician? If you want to go into the practice of medicine, you need to find someone understands practice administration and learn from them. If you don't want to practice, then you need to figure out what you would want to do with an MD. There are opportunities available on that side of things. You need to make that decision as it shapes the rather lengthy answer I have.

Gator grad here. If you want to do banking/finance change your major to finance/economics, be in top of your grades and apply to internships. First, decide what path do you want to take.
