Which specific courses would you guys recommend?

I guess this fits in the new user introductions as this is my first post.

Okay, so I'll be a junior this upcoming Spring Semester, finance major. I'm still not sure as to exactly what I'd like to do after I graduate, but as of now, I'm interested in both commercial banking and real estate. For Summer Session II, I'll be taking Financial Management, which is the 'door' to my major-specific courses.

My requirements are: International Finance, Investments, and Intermediate corporate finance.
I also have the option to take two of the following: Management of Financial Institutions, Derivatives & Financial Risk Management, Money & Fixed Income Markets, Real Estate Investment & Finance, Financial Modeling, Financial Statement Analysis, and the last two options are working for a fund at my school and getting field experience.

Because I'll have two extra free electives, I actually plan on taking two more of the mentioned courses. So my question is which courses do you guys think will be the most beneficial for me? Based on my interest in commercial banking and real estate, it's obvious that I should take Management of Fin. Institutions and Real Estate Investment, but in the event I don't go into either, which courses will help me out the most in the long run?

Financial Modeling is a given, but I'm not so sure about the rest. Please, no bashing. Lol.

I would highly recommend financial statement analysis. If you pursue a career in either commercial banking or real estate it will be helpful to be able to not only read financial statements but also to understand ratio analysis. Anyone can be a number cruncher and churn out ratios, however understanding the story they tell is where you can really add value to whatever career path you choose.

By field experience do you mean a co-op with a commercial bank or real estate agency? If so I would also recommend you explore that as an option as well.

Finally with your remaining two electives do they have to be from those courses? If you have the ability to take some accounting courses beyond financial accounting (Intermediate or Advanced Financial) that could benefit you greatly depending on where you end up. Perhaps an even better option would be to take some additional economics courses, in particular anything relating to financial markets & institutions, or, money & banking. There will be some overlap of topics from your finance courses but overall I felt the courses were more in depth and added to my understanding of financial topics.

Yes, by field experience I mean a co-op. My guess is that I'd have a list of companies to choose from, but I'm not sure. I'll email the professor tomorrow.

No, my electives don't have to be from those courses; I was under the impression that they should be. I actually have thought about minoring in either Economics or Accounting, thus using those two extra free electives to take up either Econ/Acc. courses so I'm glad you mentioned that. I do see a Money and Banking course, so I'll look into that. There are others too that seem interesting: Economics and Management of Privatization, Public Finance, Comparative Economic Systems, etc. I'll take a look into all of those. I'll be sure to let you know what the professor says about the co-op.
