2 weeks into internship and i'm already sleep deprived
struggling to keep my eyes open as i write this post. how embarrassing... i'm not even a ft analyst yet*
*assuming i make it this far in life :-(
So i decided to stay with my uncle outside the city (Bridgeport) and commute in... BAD IDEA, have to wake up at ~530am each day to get to the office in time (~90 minute commute each way)
I was REALLY hoping to save most of my SA $ earned this summer to pay down debt, but at this point I don't think I can stand the commute anymore.
Should I suck it up and see if my body will adjust to the change in sleep? (averaging about ~5hrs per night) OR Make the move now and find whatever room I can closer to my office? (willing to pay up to ~$1300/month if i really have to)
Any other interns out there in a similar situation?
Tbh 5 hrs is not too bad... Most people only sleep 7 hrs anyway. The reason you're feeling so miserable is most likely because of your commute. Having a long commute (I used to do 45min each way and almost pulled all my hair out) is mentally draining from personal experience and I had to turn down events/drinks often due to it. I would highly consider moving into the city if you work long hours.
I would suck it up and find a place closer to the office. Your internship is a summer long interview and you need to perform. Honestly, I cannot imagine you'll be at your best while having a 3h / day commute.
You can adjust to 5-6 but it's not comfortable. At some point (1 month, maybe) your sleep pattern will feel more normal... that said, for the $2400 you'll pay down in debt now vs. when you're working FT, I don't see it being worth it taking that commute.
You're not gonna get used to not sleeping fast enough to make the most out of your 10 wkinternship. The commute is not worth the extra savings if you're feeling too sleepy to properly function.
I believe it takes your body 21 days to form a habit so take that as you wish.
Find something closer to the office. You can always save the money you'll make when working ft.
Just sleep in the office. I would probably look around for some meeting room that's usually vacant, and hide yourself under blankets. That way, you get to save money on rent which can be used to pay down debt, and you probably maximize your sleep amount. Problem solved.
At least you get 5 hours of sleep, I'd nail 2-4 hours of sleep if I am lucky.
I agree with rand. Once you get in the office, take sleeping pills, that way if your found they cant wake you up and when you do, you will be feeling good man. Trust me man, i know of soldiers who have slept in open battlefield.
