Am I a racist if I can't understand what you're saying?

New member of the team has an accent that I'm finding difficult to understand. I am trying really hard though, asking them nicely if they can speak slower or if they can repeat themselves. I am feeling guilty though after the 5th time I ask them to say something again I just have absolutely no idea what they're saying.

I sincerely don't want to be discriminatory, however I find myself avoiding getting on calls with them and asking them to just send me emails instead but I cannot understand them.

I feel like there is a difference though between having an accent and just not saying a word correctly. Any advice on how to navigate this? I do feel really bad about it.

I really wanna know what their accent is lol

No, you're not racist for not being able to understand someone's heavy accent. That's not how it works.

My comment was probably flagged which led to the series of comments being removed.  I made a joke about deportation and was called a racist

If you can't understand them, you can't understand them.

Is this what liberals are up to nowadays, hiding from minorities in the office because they think they are being racist?

There's a difference between "apologies, could you please repeat that" and "Hey bud, they must have really shitty English teachers where you come from because I have no idea what the fuck you are saying."

Shit so that's what HR meant by phrasing...

Honestly it should be a standard evaluation of communication ability as a pre req to getting the job on the first place in a job like IB…sure coders that spend their time alone all day can avoid talking to anyone but I want my deal broker to “talk the talk” like any other team member who has to learn the soft skill side of things. It’s not racist to say that if you want to be client facing you will have to work a bit harder to make sure they can communicate with you easily - accents can be unlearned.

Had this issue with an Israeli client once.

The guy had the thickest accent I've ever heard when attempting to speak English, and he called me an "Anti-Semite" when I told him I couldn't literally understand anything he was saying.

I don't do Israeli deals anymore.
