Does Anyone else keep an eye on everyone in your cart and stay close to the door? I also would love to hear if there’s anyone else out there who Carrie’s a weapon with them, if so, what?

Carrie's a weapon

Carrie is a weapon?

I grew up in a very rough neighborhood and had to take the subway all the time. Got jumped on a platform twice as a teen and got into some scuffles on the train growing up. Here is some advice: 1) if going to stand near the yellow on the floor so you can get on first, dont let anyone stand behind you especially when train is approaching, if I see someone, I step aside or stand sideways so I have great balance and can react if needed. 2) If you see a group of mean mugging people looking for trouble, that means they are. Walk to the next stop, trust me this would of saved me from trouble in the past. 3) As f'ed up as this sounds…if you see a group of Manhattan bros just hanging. Stay close to them, chances are they won't do anything to hurt you. 4) keep your eye on peoples hands. I've learned that peoples hands will tell you everything you need to know, where are they positioned and if you can see them / look off, follow your gut and immediately walk away. 5) sometimes you are in the train and now you are trapped and nothing you can really do if something goes down, do yourself a favor and try to never stand in the center or sit in the center. I always sit next to the door in between cars, easy escape route if something looks off or pops off. That's all I really got atm, the subway these days are scary but it's more scary when you walk in there scared and a easy target. Just be cool, be aware and smart. Dont look like a pussy when traveling above 125th ST and you'll be ok.

Great post. The hands is a great tip - learned this from a retired FBI officer at firm safety training.

Will add not to get on the subway with headphones on, at least take one earbud out so you have some sense of what's going on. Can't believe how many people I see walking around at night with the huge over-ear headphones on these days.

Can also go to the next subway car at the next stop if you have a bad feeling about someone

The fact that you have to dish out that kind of advice is just sad in itself. But I'm glad you spread the word for the rest of us. Where I live, we drive everywhere and public transport just isn't a thing, so this was pretty whack for me to read if I'm honest.

Thanks for the awesome advice! Moving to NYC soon and I’ve been a bit worried hearing all this bad news.

I was wondering what you meant by “Manhattan bros”? You mean like the posh-looking guys in suits?

Also, if you dress up decently well (dress shirt and dress shoes) and walk on a subway, have you noticed more or less negative attention? I ask because my firm allows either casual or business casual attire and I was planning on dressing well but I don’t want to attract the wrong sort of attention if I look “well off”.

Because they’re going to get elected regardless. Career politicians no longer see the job as public service and serving their country but as a way to get rich quick, funneling as much tax payer dollars into their pockets as possible and taking bribes from mega donors.

Since it's America, I assume you all are responding to this by arming yourselves to the teeth with guns?

Not in NYC. Only violent criminals and celebrities have guns. No one else is allowed to have them. The Supreme Court just overturned New York’s law effectively banning people from legally carrying outside their house and the state’s response is to ignore the ruling and double down. It’s a lawless city and state.

You're really going to be that guy, huh? So early on a Sunday morning too.

I'm in the process of moving to NYC so, obviously, I'm keeping a close eye on stories like this.

I was already concerned about the subway - and public transport in general - because Covid is still very much a thing and I have no interest in dying alone with a breathing tube down my throat.

My counter to this is that I will be living close to the office - I'm buying, not renting - and I have asked my real estate agents to focus on buildings in FiDi. I am going to live no more than a mile from work and will not need to ride the subway. Anything else (or bad weather days) I will just uber or drive my own car. I took these expenses into account when negotiating my new salary so I think it will be a viable plan. Yes, buying a condo in FiDi might cost me more than a co-op in other neighborhoods, but it's worth it to me.

lol you're going to drive your car 1 mile? Where exactly would you park?

Just a few things:

1) Nothing wrong with FiDi, but it is one of the cheapest neighborhoods in Manhattan (that has also suffered some of the biggest price declines recently). Again, nothing wrong with it, but your comment about paying up for this is a bit strange (maybe condo vs coop)

2) driving a car in bad weather 1 mile to the office is a bad idea. Not only for the cost, but for the fact that you have stated many times you have a sports car (and I believe without AWD) so if the weather is that bad (specifically talking about snow) then it is going to be worse for you to drive. I would recommend Uber (although usually subway is your best bet in bad weather)

3) not sure what buying vs renting has to do in this context. Found it odd that it was included.

Realize my post sounds negative, not trying to be, but just found some of your comments odd and not very related to the discussion.

I'm bringing both cars with me, one is an SUV with AWD so I'm OK with that in the weather.

The buying/renting discussion should probably be another thread (for any number of reasons), but I'm including that in the sense that I am committed to the area. I think that's important if you're going to show that the city can improve and can be on an upswing in spite of the negative side that the subways et. al. are portraying right now.

Man I don’t understand how physically healthy people are still worried about Covid. I’m vaccinated and more worried about any long term effects of the vaccine than I am of Covid, which I’ve had (and believe I’ve had it multiple times but still not sure if that’s possible)

These posts are so weird to me.  Never had any issue on the subway in NYC or Chicago and don’t plan to have any issue.  You know how many people ride the subway every day with no problems?  I saw a post on the reddit travel forum the other day about someone scared to come to America because it was so crime ridden and racist.  Absolutely insane.  You guys are crazy stop reading the news you’ll never leave your house.

I agree w you to an extent but to say that crime isn’t increasing in metro areas (all led by dems) would be to ignore the issue

Lol I literally had to google main character syndrome and the first thing that popped up was that it’s a Tik Tok phrase.  The irony that you used a Tik Tok phrase to say I’m out of touch (the definition given) is comical.  You’re literally proving my point

They just arrested a suspect, apparently not a random crime like some of the recent ones have been if that makes anyone feel better. Very sad for a young kid to lose his life though.

Driving is still orders of magnitude more dangerous than any kind of public transportation, I don’t see what all the hype is over.  Drunks and drug addicts are scary, but they are much more scary when they’re in control of two tons of steel.

NYC has a very low murder rate compared to many U.S. cities which is an accomplishment in and of itself given it's population and population density. NYC crime has been on a steady decline for a solid 2 decades, I'm talking trendlines not 1 year blips.

This has all occured with democrats running the city. But since politics is about feelings, the data above is irrelevant.

NYC crime began decreasing due to Guliani

You guys are incorrigible… this was a targeted gang hit far uptown on a known gang member in response to a diss song. It’s tragic for the child and the family, it’s horrible that we have 14 year olds caught up in that world, but it has literally zero bearing on what anyone here will experience in the city. If this makes you fear for your commute, you probably shouldn’t ever leave the house…

It’s not normal, it’s horrifying. It also has little to nothing to do with the subway itself - he got attacked outside the station because of the diss track and it spilled over onto the platform. If your psycho ex comes and attacks you in the parking lot because they knew you’d be there, that isn’t an indictment of the parking lot. I have plenty of frustrations with my daily commute, but safety is pretty low on the list of realistic concerns
