I get that politicians play hard & fast with the truth, but this dude has crossed the line into some creepy, pathological type of lying indicative of some type of mental health issues.

He lied about literally everything, not just his education & work history, but who he is as an individual. Guy said he was Jewish & a family of holocaust survivors....and his last name is "Santos" and he is clearly Hispanic (and now admittedly Catholic). He also claimed to be proudly openly gay despite being married to a woman for almost a decade. Then there was the whole story about how he stiffed a landlord because his mother was sick and he didn't have money....I'm not going to call BS on someone's mother having cancer, but if he's lying about this it would be very par for the course and very scummy/ There's something seriously wrong with this dude. Probably a type of Borderline Personality Disorder or some other Identity issues.

For me, it's fascinating. I lack the medical tenure to make any sort of reputable diagnosis, but I've been following for a) the sheer absurdity of it and b) the wild applications of the human brain. I've read articles depicting how those thrown into the 'pathological liar' department genuinely believe what they are saying. While it may appear purely sociopathic from the outside (which I'm not denying it is), apparently these people are literally unable to determine the difference between truth and lie. To them, when they say something so clearly fake, every part of their mind believes it.

The study of the brain is fascinating. Of course, I could be overanalyzing and this guy is just a ridiculously sleazy sociopath playing politics. I just can't fathom how you allow your brain to get that far, thinking you truly won't get caught, without having some kind of underlying disorder. Not defending the guy in any way, but wow is it interesting?

Agree. I've often wondered, with those in the "pathological" category, if it is related to some type of deeply rooted insecurity / fear of people "seeing through you". As in you become so used to being guarded and defensive, initially about specific insecurities, that it becomes automatic instinct for one to cover up even the most trivial and benign of their behaviors with fallacies. I had a friend like this and it was interesting to watch how he worked. He clearly had some demons he would try to hide from us and frequently resorted to lying to cover up his junky behavior. He would lie about what he did the night before, where he was all weekend, why he missed certain events, when the last time he did drugs was, who stole the missing bottle of Adderall (it was always him & we all knew it), etc.

But that type of lying for self preservation makes sense. It's brutal, but understandable. What was nuts is that he also started to lie about small things. Literally, ask him any question about what he did the day before, and he would make up some kind of story, even if I knew for a fact where he was and what he was doing because I talked to his brother. Shit, if you asked him what he ate for breakfast he would lie about it for seemingly no reason. He just couldn't be honest or admit to anything. My armchair psychologist theory is that he just got so ashamed of himself on a general level plus got so used to having to hide "the real him" from us that it became an automatic instinct to hide the truth about ANYTHING, not just his drug problem.

Agree with the guy above. Man has serious issues. His whole life is a lie. Some interesting tidbits from Wiki (there are way more):

-Santos later said: "I never claimed to be Jewish ... I said I was 'Jew-ish'."

-On his campaign website, Santos wrote that his mother was "the first female executive at a major financial institution" and that she worked in the South Tower of the World Trade Center and survived the September 11 attacks.11 His mother's actual occupation has been described as domestic worker12 or home care nurse.13 Santos depicted his family as wealthy and successful business owners, but a Catholic priest reported that Santos had told him the family could not afford a funeral when Santos's mother died in 2016.

-Santos claimed to hold a bachelor's degree in finance and economics from Baruch College, but the school has no record of this, and the period Santos said he was at Baruch overlapped with his time in Brazil.7 He also claimed to hold a Master of Business Administration degree from New York University, but NYU has no record of his attendance.[16] In December 2022, Santos told the Post: "I didn't graduate from any institution of higher learning. I'm embarrassed and sorry for having embellished my résumé ... We do stupid things in life."3[15]

-Santos described himself as a "seasoned Wall Street financier and investor" and said he had worked for Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, but neither company has any record of him.7 Santos' campaign website stated that Santos "began working at Citigroup as an associate and quickly advanced to become an associate asset manager in the real asset division of the firm".3 However, Citigroup sold its asset management division in 2005.7 Santos's claimed employment at Citigroup overlapped with his employment as a Dish Network customer service representative during the same period.12 He clarified to the Post that a subsequent employer had been in limited partnerships with those companies and his claim that he had been employed there was "a poor choice of words ... I will be clearer about that."

Him claiming to have worked for GS and Citigroup because he worked for a company that had once interacted with GS and Citigroup is next-level reaching and absurd.

Bit of a weirdo Republican. A gay Republican who doesn't believe in abortion rights. Seems kind of hypocritical. He wants rights which contradict reason given to him for his personal choices, but won't allow women to exercise their rights...

Oh, and he lied to his ex-wife too.

Everything about this person's character is immoral down to the core.

That's your interpretation of what I wrote, but I didn't express my view on gay marriage one way or the other, other than that him wanting an abortion ban is hypocritical.

Agree with all you guys - this just honestly blows my mind. Whilst politicians today on both sides of the aisle (I'm a centrist who doesn't like either party) have various issues and are no stranger to embellishment, this just goes a million miles beyond that. I mean this would be like finding out Trump had actually only ever run a tiny mom-and-pop store in Brooklyn, or that Obama not only didn't ever finish law school but he didn't even graduate high-school - it's that level of magnitude (on Trump I realize his business practices are highly debatable, but he's clearly very wealthy and while his actual business success is subjective - this guy Santos isn't a subjective case at all, he just made literally everything up!)

My question is how on earth his Democrat opponent didn't uncover at least some of this. Presumably now there's no mechanism to remove him from office, as a) he was democratically elected (if you ignore the fact he completely mis-represented himself) and b) the existing legislative framework probably never anticipated someone would lie to this extent and also manage to get away with it. Absolutely mad situation.

This man is so pathetic it's amusing and disgusting at the same time. On one hand, I think he should absolutely lose his position and be barred from political office. On the other, I can't help but feel pessimistic bordering on uncaring what happens because enough people were genuinely stupid enough to believe his drivel. Those voters kind of deserve him.

It's interesting because a lot of things he lied about were things that were so unassuming that no one bothered to look into it. I'm not saying it was planned, but I really don't think he's a pathological liar like some people are saying. Why would someone lie about going to *Baruch* and NYU's MBA program? Who would lie about being Jewish or having a mother who died in 9/11 (Edited from Holocaust)? The only reaches are Citi and GS, but thousands work for those firms in various roles across BO/MO/FO positions.

It's mindboggling.

Someone who lies about things that don't matter and they shouldn't have any reason TO lie about is practically the definition of a pathological liar. It's someone who literally can't help BUT to lie regardless of the circumstances.

I'm very curious about the kind of campaigning this guy must have done and how much he lied to people on the road, more so than a regular politician normally does. A Republican last carried this district in 2013 (from 1993 no less by Peter King who I'm personally unfamiliar with but sounds like he was a very centrist Republican).
