I wouldn't do it. You've heard of people being fired for stunts like this, I've seen it. Not to mention they also certainly let the next place know to keep an eye on that person for trust concerns.
how did it play out?
He still got the new job, but like Bonds's hall of fame entry there was an asterisk on it. He always had someone looking over his shoulder and never built any real trust in the new shop, regardless of results. Never achieved any autonomy because the precedent was set that "what if he's just using our tools and platform to build his book and P&L and then leave us high and dry?". Eventually just left the industry to get away from his history.

May think so, but hey, people talk! And the higher you climb in any field the professional social circle gets tighter and tighter unless you want to jump and move across country. Even then that just slows the tightening as you keep climbing.
Fair - i can see it being different at higher levels for sure.
