BB 1st Yr Analyst Dress Code

Hey what is the realistic dress code for a first yr analyst at a BB in NYC. How many suits/shirts/pants would you suggest?

Thanks!

When you buy suits be sure to get 2-3 pairs of pants, they wear out a lot quicker than the jackets.

Ask the 1st year full-timers obviously. Banks range a lot like gstackle noted - remember when Lehman existed, they were suit and tie every single day...

To answer the OPs question, again, it depends on the bank.

If business formal four days a week, I would buy four suits (one solid charcoal and one solid navy in all-season worsted, one solid medium grey flannel, one light grey in a tropical weight with a subtle pattern). Also, buy a navy blazer. I would budget about $2,000 total.

I would also buy about four odd trousers (dark grey, dark navy, khaki, and light grey, all solid). About $100 each. $400 total.

CT, TM Lewin, and BB are fine for dress shirts (tailored, fully fitted, and extra slim fit respectively) at around $40 each. Yo should probably buy ten shirts total (white and blue bases, mostly) so you only have to do laundry once every two weeks. That's $400 total.

You can stick to 4-5 ties for now (quality over quantity is important here). Personally, I favor solid or subtly patterned ties in heavier silks. I would look to spend about $50-$70 each (could do bespoke with Sam Hober at that range). So, about $300 total.

Get three shoes (one black balmoral captoe, one dark brown captoe with a light brouging and a medallion, and one pair of medium brown loafers). Highly recommend Meermin here. Link here: http://meermin.es/. That should run you about $700 total.

So, from your 10k signing bonus (about $6,900 after taxes), you're looking at about $3,800 in building your wardrobe.

I consistently hear people say this and it really confuses me. No first year analysts should be buying suit separates (where you can get multiple pairs of pants for each suit), as they are too cheap and generally ill-fitting. On the other end of the spectrum, no first year should be spending the $1,000+ required to get decent MTM suits, where you can have multiple trousers made. Decent OTR brands do not sell pants separately.
When one man, for whatever reason, has an opportunity to lead an extraordinary life, he has no right to keep it to himself.
