This is clearly a shitpost but unironically the answer is to get ripped and wear higher quality tailoring. It’s a flex to not look like one of the malnourished orphans from Annie in lululemon dress pants.

Most Helpful

tanned / polished / athletic / well-fitted suits and stylish (no sneakers/vests/brown belts or shoes) / eye contact / speak confidently / be assertive / outside working hours do as many outdoor activities and events so you can interesting small talks / be social / classic haircut / don't smoke or vape / always be up to date with news / don't creep women / don't gossip and know when to retreat graciously from those situations / do impeccable work / speak eloquently and train to speak concisely / avoid toxic colleagues / never show signs of stress/pressure / be proactive / always do your work with a smile and enthusiasm no matter how much you're getting crushed

it's basic but few sustain this level over 2 years

This is all great advice.

Will say train to speak concisely takes awhile to develop and varies at companies. I'm a fast talker so I've learned to slow it down during calls but it can be challenging at my current role. Some of the seniors (partners) talk super fast and want me to get to the point ASAP while I slow things down and take my time to explain my thought processes to my direct superior (pseudo manager) who likes to go more granular in our meetings. It's honestly been a challenge to figure out the communication styles of the seniors on my team as they seem to have their quirks.

because I'm European and I do have an a sense of style

can't comment on ur style, the most casual I ever dressed in an office is in penny loafers like those from below with some beige pants and blue shirt, and I do match it with a suede brown belt as well (shoes and belt always to match texture and color. not sure if this is too much for an american office, so exercise judgement. I work in more formal offices.

Controversial

Aura farming is just a weird name for presence and that involves confidence which is a result of having competence. There really isn't a shortcut for that stuff, but if you want to stand out in most rooms do the following:

  1. Workout
  2. Learn how to fight
  3. Shower (and have good all-around hygiene)
  4. Skincare
  5. Some sense of style that fits you
  6. Be well read
  7. Have an eclectic taste in music, movies, and all sorts of entertainment
  8. Be up-to-date on current events
  9. Have a good haircut that fits you
  10. Know how to talk to all sorts of people without judging them (also involves having a good vocabulary)
  11. Become a good public speaker
  12. Know how to read a room and work a room
  13. Have good manners
  14. Learn all aspects of your job
  15. Be consistent and trustworthy, and keep your word even to yourself (don't break promises to yourself cause your mind will know when you're full of shit if you try to lie to yourself about being that guy. If you tell yourself or someone you're going to do something, do it no matter what or don't say it at all.)
  16. Practice stoicism (it helps you keep cool under pressure when everyone is losing their shit. It helps you put life in perspective so you're unbothered about stupid stuff you can't control, you want to respond to things and not react to everything. With that in mind, don't complain about anything especially when everyone else in the office is bitching about everything.)
  17. Find Jesus (it helps to be grounded and held accountable to something greater than yourself)

If you do all of that you'll stand out in any room, but this doesn't happen overnight. It has to be who you are otherwise you look like some lame who is faking it.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.
