Book Recommendations
I'm a college junior with an IB internship this summer. Does anyone have recommendations of books to read prior to starting in IB? I'm not necessarily looking for a book that will teach me valuations or anything like that, but just one that will prepare me for the job and have me sounding like I know what I'm talking about once I'm there.
You’ll be fine. Just not to stress out too much and befriends with your intern class and your seniors.
Don’t think too much about the return offer. You know it when people like you.
Mein kampf
What about Das Kapital?
read that after mein kampf. Follow that by the Catechism of the Council of Trent.
Before I moved from Hawaii to San Francisco to start my career in finance 15 years ago, I read the book Barbarians at the Gate (largest LBO of its time) and also a book called Term Sheets and Valuations. I had no idea the world I was getting into. I remember reading the book on the plane.
Later on in a MBA class, my professor was one of these old school PE partners and I learned so much.
So, I think there is value in learning about deal making from long ago.
The Term Sheet book helps with jargon. It wasn’t until after a few years into the career that I was negotiating contracts - but it helps to understand positioning, down side protection, and upside maximization. A good deal is not just about price.
Term Sheets and Valuations is available in PDF form online for free btw. Will be giving it a read during breaks so my brain doesn't turn to mush, thanks for the recommendation!
Great!
Investment Banking by Rosenbaum and Pearl is great, but also take time to relax is my advice.
And then there were none by Agatha Christie. It is the only thriller novel in which even if you read the last page by chance, you'd still not be able to guess who the killer is.
Also I like The Picture of Dorian Gray. Man what a book.
Bronze Age Mindset
Read what you enjoy, as a new hire they will know you are green and don't know anything...
I recommend: Game of Thrones, Stormlight Archives and Malazan
Pick up some Stephen Frey books.
Or Stephen Fry books like "Mythos" or "Heroes," excellent.
Discussion Materials. Will help you chill out a bit and relax, who knows. Definitely very funny.
Make Your Bed by William H. McRaven
Not a book that'll teach you about finance but what it will do is equip you with the mentality to tackle whatever comes your way.
It's a super fast read but one I come back to every now and again.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
