I'm going to be working in Boston this summer and wanted to know what the city is like. Obviously it's not as exciting as the school year since the students are gone. And the city doesn't have nearly as many interns as NYC or Chicago. But is the social scene really that bad during the summer? How's the nightlife?

Boston is a whole lot better in the summer in my book, then again I was already working FT when I started spending the summer there. There are still plenty of people at bars in the city, particularly the ones that do al fresco. Dillon's is solid for that in the Back Bay. McGreevy's is a little douchier and all indoors but not too bad. In the South End, the Beehive is quite nice. There's also Tia's downtown which will always be packed when the sun is out, but it's painfully Nantucket douchetastic.
Whatever you do, don't ever go to Whiskey's on Boylston. Just awful.
I think Boston is actually pretty upbeat during the summer. There's still a decent number of college students around for internships, summer classes, and research... and the fact that school isn't in session full-time means said students go out a lot more. I'm sure the good weather plays some part too. And of course, Independence Day celebrations here are crazy awesome.
I second the recommendation for Dillon's. Haven't been to the others. If you're into the clubbing scene we have quite a few awesome venues as well.

Boston is nice during the summer man, what area will you be staying in?
I'm from here and will be interning there this summer also. I don't really know the night life around here beside the under 21 places (i'm 19). But there's a lot of things to do in the city though.
I'm going to be staying in allston, just across the river from cambridge.
I'm way past college and don't know anyone in the city, so I'm worried it will be tough to meet people. A friend told me that the city does have finance interns, grad students, research people, etc. So hopefully I can meet some smart interesting folks.
Tons of bars in Allston. Tons of college kids and recent graduates around. So if you're worried about getting wasted and smashing chicks, you will be fine.
Not so sure of the smart interesting folks though. Harvard is a short bus ride away.
As I said above, I'm too old for the college bar scene. I'm looking for the sophisticated 25+ scene.
I really want to network with some boston buyside folks.
The only bad thing about Boston in the summertime: less college-aged females running around. Boston's got a huge undergraduate population.
Beacon Hill works as well in that case but I don't know the area as much.
A lot of the older crowd hang out around the theater district. There are some good bars and clubs around the area that caters to the mid 20s to 30s form what I've heard.
The summer program students at HBS and Sloan will definitely be around and mingling in the city, if you're looking to network with some of the other Type-As.
Beacon Hill is boring in my opinion, but maybe that's just the young blood in me speaking. It's definitely a quaint little part of the city though.
