When I got a Summer Associate offer I went down to the Brooks Brothers in Beverly Hills. I walked in ready to buy a suit and several shirts, pants, belts, socks, etc. The service was ATROCIOUS. If you're going to have a brick and mortar store with a focus on old-school, timeless fashion, have good service. Specifically, I mean service that is prompt, knowledgeable, friendly, and customer-centric (recommending what the customer actually needs and educating them).

I was so disappointed that I was treated as "less than" as if they were waiting for some more well-off customer to walk through the doors. If I know my measurements, might as well just order online.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

Same story in a different store. I walked in looking to buy multiple suits as I was moving from a business casual company to a more formal shop. I have an athletic build, so anything off the rack can be difficult, but I know how to buy and get it tailored. Nothing I tried on even remotely fit. No worries though - not everything does.

All along, the lady helping me made it seem like I somehow made moral errors along the way that would lead me to the suit not fitting. She, in all seriousness, even suggested that I stop working out, as if I was the problem, not the suits.

I had intended on buying 2-3 suits and various accessories. Multiple thousands of dollars, I would imagine. I walked out without spending a cent. Good riddance.

Nah, like an idiot I went back the next year before FT. Same story but this time with outsourced tailoring, done incorrectly multiple times and late, trying to sell me differently sized pants and promising to make it up in the tailoring? (like selling size 32 as well as size 34 pants that would be tailored to be the same) because that's all they had.

Having to chase down an Associate, them seeming like they'd rather be doing anything else, etc. I know working retail sucks but I've definitely had far better experiences in places like the Apple Store where they don't even get commission. I've also had fantastic customer experiences at Allen Edmonds stores.

I imagine that's because the old guy has been around a while and actually knows a thing or two about being properly dressed. The young sales associates don't look remotely like anything their core customer is supposed to look like, and most sartorially-inclined customers could run circles around them when it comes to clothing (some are so clueless it's funny). As far as I can tell, they've been dying for thirty years, neglecting loyal customers while attempting (and failing) to innovate by going after a much more saturated market.

Yep - and I would bet a huge part of that is shelling/downsizing most retail locations

I have a special place in my heart for BB- I lived in their clothes for 4 years in boarding school - but I really have to concur with everyone here that, as a retail business focused on high end service, they degraded the product. Every time I’ve gone in it’s been garbage service - seems like they chose the retired car-dealership owners of Tucson over working-age professionals in New York.

I hope whatever distressed fund buys them turns it around.

I will say, I've always preferred J. Crew over BB, regardless of price. Design, quality and durability always seemed better.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.
