Buenos Aires

Staying in Buenos Aires for a few days before hitting Patagonia in early November. Looking for some cool experiences, any suggestions? I'm a big futbol fan, so will try to get to a game if possible (any tips on tickets?). Would love to hear what you guys think, especially those based in Buenos Aires.

Side question, is there a way to get into the stock exchange? Staying close to it and think that would be sick.

Do you mean October? November is over a month away…

Would highly recommend checking out or trying to get a tour of the cemetery there. Sounds a bit odd, but it was one of my favorite parts of the city. The history and architecture behind it are truly incredible. I also recommend stopping by El Sanjaunino for empanadas, and checking out La Boca. Wish I was able to recommend more, however my visit to the city was back in 2017 so my memory is fading. Hope this helps.

I was just in Argentina several months ago. I spent all of my time - six or seven days - in Buenos Aires. Argentina is an amazing place and much different than most other Latin American countries. If you stay in BA make sure to find a hotel or AirB&B in Palermo, specifically Palermo Soho / Palermo Hollywood. It is the trendiest part of town with all the best restaurants and shopping. My favorites in BA, which were recommended by an Argentinian B-school classmate, were Don Julio's, Anchoita, Pizzeria Guerrin, Presidente Bar, Peron Peron, and Cafe London. The most important thing you need to do is to bring new, crisp US dollars into the country - fifty and one hundred dollar bills are best and will result in the best exchange rate. Argentina has had strict capital controls for a decade, so you are able to exchange your money safely and easily through unofficial exchanges on street corners for more than double the official bank/ATM exchange rate. It makes shopping and dining extremely affordable. However, do not exchange more money than you will spend because those pesos will be worthless outside of Argentina.

Blue rate is the only way to go. Don’t settle for the official FX rate. Take clean, unripped USD and plan to pay cash for everything. A lot of times you can just use the USD at restaurants (and get the blue rate) but easier to exchange ahead of time.

expect to wait at Don Julio. But definitely go. It’s already fully booked for months but they give you champagne and empanadas while you wait. Roll up around 6:45 (or later I guess if you’re cool waiting), throw your name on the list when they open at 7 and you’ll have a great time.

Get some choripán, it’s all over the place but there’s a place in the center of the San Telmo market that was really good. Order a gin and tonic with it, that’s the traditional combo.

Pizzeria Guerrin was solid but I just got it from the front. Would definitely sit down and order so it’s piping hot when it comes out.

I love Buenos Aires. The city, the people, the food. It’s all good.
