Buying in New Jersey
What are some good areas in NJ to buy a starter home if one needs to commute to nyc? Is this a good time in the market to get in?

Summit, Montclair. I wouldn't want to commute to NYC from any further west, personally. I would look at towns along the Morris/Essex line. Summit, Short Hills, Millburn are all very nice (but expensive). You could probably find something smaller as a starter home - what's your budget/how far of a commute can you tolerate?
~400k would be my budget. Looking for 35- 40 min commute time. Don't care about schools or anything like that cus I'm pretty junior.
You either need to increase your budget or increase the commute or rent. Your budget is not compatible at all with your commute. 35 to 40 minutes is very close to NYC and will be very expensive
Commenting for reference (might be making a move to Jersey if a job opportunity comes through).
What's your budget? Other post is spot on though. NJ gets a lot of sh*t from NYers but it's actually an amazing state to raise a family if you're upper middle class or beyond (especially North Jersey near NYC).
