Can happiness ever be achieved?

Does anyone else struggle to imagine a future in which they are happy? Even if I imagine myself with a good job, kids, spouse, house, bank account, etc. (even significantly beyond the normal levels of success financially) I just don't see myself truly content. Am I in a slump or just coming to terms with the realities of life?

Happiness is a temporary state of being you decide on by your attitude, not something reached by finishing a level or accomplishing something. It starts by being grateful for what you have instead of constantly thinking about what you're lacking.

"If you don't have any enemies in life you have never stood up for anything" - Winston Churchill | "It's a testament to the sheer belligerence of the profession that people would rather argue about the 'risk-adjusted returns' of using inferior tooth cleaning methods." - kellycriterion

This. Is happiness truly the word we are looking for in life? Seems to me that constant happiness shouldnt be something that exists, its just suffering. I guess a better word would be an overall fulfilling life? Satisfying mife?

some of my thoughts are there

the first problem with what you said is you're only focused on the future. focus on the present moment and all that you have going for you. you clearly have a functioning brain, not something everyone has (esp. anonymous off topic posters), you likely have functioning limbs, you likely live in a place with internet, and because you're here, you have some semblance of education.

thinking about what you don't have will always mean you're miserable (case in point - I know people with orders of magnitude more wealth than they could ever need and are still unhappy). being grateful for what you do while on the journey to better yourself will lead you to a better place emotionally
