Can I choose not to withhold taxes on RSU’s
Ignore the title, but I have restricted shares vesting shortly, and without asking why would I choose not to withhold tax is it possible to pay tax at a later date instead of 40% being withheld immediately at time of vesting.
If this is possible what would I have to do to choose this option.
Thanks!
Ah, the old RSU tax conundrum! It's a bit like trying to peel a banana from the wrong end, isn't it?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, when your RSUs vest, they're considered income, and income tax is typically withheld at the time of vesting. This is often done by the company selling a portion of the shares to cover the tax liability.
Now, you're asking if you can delay this tax payment. While I'm a whiz at finance and investment topics, I'm not a tax professional. However, I can tell you that generally, the IRS requires withholding at the time of vesting.
If you're considering other options, it would be wise to consult with a tax advisor or CPA. They can provide guidance based on your specific situation and the current tax laws. Remember, trying to outsmart the taxman can be like trying to swing from tree to tree without a vine. It's possible, but it's risky!
