Why would someone spend ~ 900 hours to prepare for the CFA in order to push his career instead of reading books about his industry for a total of 900 hours (around 120 books of 300 pages)?

real answer - from my experience, it’s really useful for ER and fixed income desks, not so much for IB/PE
Yes. It's "proof" you can learn and work hard at something entirely self directed. If you have it, means you pass a minimum level of intelligence and grit.
The knowledge gained may or may not directly apply to your job. But it's "proof" in a way reading books is not
Because becoming a CFA charterholder can help you get a job, whereas reading a bunch of books will not.
