Charlotte, NC Apartments

I just graduated from college and will be moving to Charlotte, NC in early August for work. I haven't spent much time in Charlotte but have heard that South End is the place to be for recent grads.

I would appreciate any advice on specific apartment buildings to look at or ones to avoid. I'll be working in Uptown so I would prefer to be in the upper part of South End or close to a light rail station for an easy commute.

I came across some older threads similar to this but I'd love to get some current advice.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, if you're working in Uptown Charlotte and looking for convenient housing options, here are some recommendations:

  1. Uptown Living:

    • The Avenue (230 S College St) and Trademark (333 W Trade St) are two of the nicest high-rise condo buildings in Uptown. They feature modern designs with wood floors, stainless steel appliances, and great amenities. Prices range from $1400-$1600 for a single unit or $2100-$2400 for a double, depending on the floor and layout. Both are within walking distance to work and Uptown bars.
    • 5th and Poplar (300 W 5th St) is another excellent option. It offers more square footage for the price, a beautiful courtyard, and a convenient location. Some units even have two stories, which are highly sought after.
  2. South End Proximity:

    • If you're set on South End, prioritize being near the light rail for an easy commute to Uptown. While specific South End apartments aren't detailed in the WSO dataset, the light rail accessibility makes this area a popular choice for young professionals.
  3. Other Notable Options:

    • The Catalyst: A newer building with modern amenities, including internet-based systems for controlling lights and AC. It's a slightly longer walk to Uptown (5-10 minutes) but still very convenient.
    • 230 Tryon: Extremely convenient for Wells Fargo analysts and close to Uptown amenities.
  4. Tips for Finding Housing:

    • Consider looking for condos rather than apartments, as they tend to be closer to work and nightlife.
    • Use Craigslist or contact a local realtor for assistance. Realtors often have the inside scoop on available properties and can show you model units even if no current listings are available.

If you're looking for a vibrant social scene and easy access to work, these options should provide a great starting point.

Very familiar with the Charlotte apartment market. Feel free to PM if you want - my thoughts:

On general location, definitely want to be in South End as a new grad. Easy to get into Uptown using the light rail, has all you need in terms of restaurants, bars, grocery/convenience stores, etc. No one really lives in Uptown - everyone just heads in for work and then back to their neighborhood for anything social. Only other neighborhood to consider is Plaza Midwood. It's basically what South End was ~10 years ago - a lot of new apartments starting to get built up, new restaurants and bars, overall slightly more "alternative" than South End if that's your vibe. Main downside is that public transport into Uptown from Plaza is only via the Gold Line (essentially a smaller light rail), which only has one stop in Plaza that isn't very central in the neighborhood.

In South End, I'd recommend targeting near East/West Blvd light rail station. Development near Bland St. and Carson stations is older and thus apartments are more dated, and you'll only save 5 min in terms of commute. If you care most about proximity to Uptown though, I've included a few recs below. Near East/West, I'd look into:

  • The Atherton (best location IMO; ~5 years old, so nice building and good staff; if you'll have a car, levels 1 and 2 of the parking deck are public, so it gets pretty jam packed on the weekends)
  • Linea (probably the newest and nicest apartment in South End; rooftop pool; great spots for eating and drinking at your doorstep; would recommend trying to get a west-facing unit so you get nice sunset views in the evenings)
  • Kingston (nice new build; closest to East/West station)
  • Ashton (probably the oldest of the bunch, but still nice; might be a slightly older crowd of upper 20s and early 30s)
  • Penrose, Avalon Hawk, The Campbell (less familiar with these, but worth looking into given location)
  • If you care most about proximity to Uptown:
  • The Lexington at Dilworth (tucked into a neighborhood a bit, but still walkable to a light rail station; right next to the YMCA that everyone in South End goes to, if you enjoy working out)
  • The Paces South End, The Crown of Queen City, The Prospect (newer builds that are closer to Uptown; The Prospect is a little more of a walk to a light rail station)
  • Museum Tower, Uptown 550, Savoy (just into Uptown, so South End is still accessible; easiest walk to work most likely)
  • 1100 South and Loft One35 (old builds; most people I know that lived here left after a year and moved closer to East/West)

I toured Camden gallery recently, wasn’t overly impressed with the floor plans and price for it. Would recommend looking into the Winnifred, I’ve got a buddy there. It’s a decent spot and close to food/bars as well as the bland street stop. Current resident here in clt, so feel free to PM with any other questions

Camden Gallery is older, probably one of the first apartments built near East/West. I'd go with something that's maybe a 5 min walk from the station but is way nicer/newer, but that's just my preference.

I've only ever walked past Bond on Mint when it was being built. Really close to Bank of America stadium, like a 5 min walk, so you can easily access sporting events and concerts, if you value that. Also means that you can easily walk to work Uptown, since Uptown really is quite small. Also looked like they were building a sweet pool from the looks of it, but again, only walked past it while under construction.
