Chinese Cell Phone subscriptions down by 21 million in past 3 months

https://abc14news.com/2020/03/24/21-million-chine…

Here is the article this is taken from although you can do more digging online as well. This highlights the fact that China might be DRASTICALLY fudging their Covid 19 numbers. Millions possibly dead. Or this might be a conspiracy theory.

What do you all think?

Mobile service subscriptions work differently in different parts of the world.

In China, you often have mobile service that relates to your home region and another for your job.  So if you're an ex-pat that's working in Europe, or a migrant worker, someone traveling on a work via, doing seasonal work, or possibly a student attending school abroad... with all the various business and/or geographic shut-downs and travel bans, services are going to get cancelled.

Hiding 21 million bodies wouldn't be easy to pull off in this day and age of corporate as well as law enforcement surveillance alongside many an individual's ability to video/stream/live feed from virtually anywhere in the world.

That's the point of the OP. I also thought China was saying that things are starting to get back to normal, and this fact shows otherwise.

I’m far less educated on this topic or even the social dynamics of China. So my perception holds little weight. That being said, 21 million is a lot. I cannot comprehend that many people dead and keeping that from coming out. I would say it’s a stretch if they fudge the order of magnitude by 10, let alone hiding 99%+ of fatalities

I believe China is lying on the stats but I don’t think the cell phone subscriptions have much to do with that. In Wuhan many people are lining up outside the mortuaries and they get paid 3000cny to keep their mouth shut. Things are surely not that optimistic

that's just nonsense. Total conspiracy theory. China is back to work. I'm working there, and while most people are working from home I'm aware of 0 people dead in my broader social and work circles. China may have f-'ed up by covering up the virus at the beginning, but they managed the containment super well. US and UK are not managing well at all.

As for the drop in cell phone accounts - most people are at home, using local wifi. Why would they need to use up their pre-paid mobile if they are at home???

And people are losing their jobs. The economic impact is only just beginning. Trimming cell phone accounts when you've lost your job and stuck at home (where there's wifi) is a very logical move. Also keep in mind that to keep your cell phone active many people have to go out and buy recharge cards. Not a lot of people are going out to the local shop to buy recharge cards. So those accounts will lapse. Further, a lot of people are using corporate phone accounts. Those are definitely going to lapse as the economy has been put into a lower gear.

Yes, you can expect a lot of slowdown in the economy in China and globally. But 21 mn dead? FFS people.

If you hear hoofbeats kids, look for horseys, not zebras, m'kay?

Look at the source of their article - Epoch Moments - it’s a well known anti-CCP cult movement that was crashed by the government 20 years ago and constantly cranking out conspiracy theories.

This is total nonsense. I know a lot of people in China including Wuhan and all other major cities. Is China reporting the statistics properly? No. Are there 21 million dead? No, and consider the source, which is pure conspiracy / propaganda.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

Where did you find this website?

I don't know anything about the Chinese cases, but this entire site is fake. It reads like it was generated by an machine learning algo, with some awkward slang mixed in for good measure.

I suspect they hope the "abc" at the front of their url makes people assume it's actually ABC ala CBS, NBC, CNN, etc. And that site appears to be less than 2 years old.

There are far more reputable sources that touched on this topic this week...

Thanks for sharing the articles, @Infodominatrix. It seems the most plausible explanation to the sudden and large drop. “...and one that China would be embarrassed to acknowledge on the record, is that the vast majority of the canceled accounts belonged to China’s so-called “water army”: The vast numbers of organized “troll farms” or “click mills” generating internet traffic for anyone willing to pay for it.”
