I think it makes perfect sense when you really think about it, in moderation any of those "traits" could actually be beneficial for your career. I mean I understand the obsession around the forum with appearing to be an alpha male and what not, but it's tough to progress in the industry without a strong self-belief and a drive for success.

My takeaway would be that the -ve traits mentioned in the article can possibly help people is moving up professionally but I am sure there are good traits that would provide at least similar results. In other words, the -ve traits may help you succeed but they are not absolutely necessary.

 

How are you gonna label a trait negative or positive? There is no idea human being. Ethics are relative. And in a world in which we don't have to kill to survive, I'd argue that any trait that doesn't result in the person hurting others or infringing on their rights is neutral.

Wow, this article is eerie. I've got a co-worker I've mentioned on here before. She is turning 28 this month and last month was promoted to VP level (true VP--like executive VP) despite being a horrible manager who everyone hates. She's used every bit of what the article discusses to rapidly move up the chain of command to a level that usually takes people until their 40s to get to. It's both impressive and disgusting. I've got one foot out the door because I refuse to ever work for this individual.

 

I have a theory that mild narcissism is essential to happiness and good work. Hear me out. Most people do not do work that is enormously important for society, or at least they are replaceable. Believing that you are special, and believing your work involving cash flows or some obscure bacteria or whatever is a really big deal means that you will do your work better and feel more fulfilled by your work. This means that people are going to deliver top-notch work and derive a sense of pride from doing it even though the result isn't overly important.
