Deleting LinkedIn a good move?

Not sure if there is a post on this but I value privacy a lot. I recently secured an offer and I plan on staying for a LONG time.

The fact that people can find out what I do and where I work online makes me uneasy. Besides for recruiting purposes, I feel like there is no use for an account.

Anyone else delete their’s or have any thoughts?

Is there a deactivate option? I'd do that rather than deleting it entirely because like you said, there's always the recruiting aspect. I started a role earlier this year that I thought I'd be at for a long time too but I've had some recruiters come to me with processes from top MM PE and other interesting roles that I probably would've never found out about if it weren't for LinkedIn. In your privacy section you can edit what people see (remove your profile pic, details of where you've worked, etc.) is they're not in your network and effect whether or not you come up in search results. I'd recommend trying that first.

I have mine deactivated and I’m an analyst even so the site is likely most useful to me in future recruiting, but I don’t see the point to keep it up until I decide to leave. I take privacy and essentially being non existent on the internet a lot more seriously than most. I suppose if you have an average joe full name then it doesn’t matter as much. But there is a lot of unneeded leverage to be had by random people knowing exactly who your employer is in my opinion. Maybe I’m paranoid but date goes bad, road rage incident, you piss someone off at bar, etc. very easy for them to come after you imo

ive not updated my my profile for my last two jobs. its only downside. with the amount of contentious stuff I post on Facebook, I cba with people complaining to my employer.

I'm pretty privacy conscious myself and recently considered this when deleting social media. I decided against it, instead opting to do the following:

  • Setting my email as private and only visible to me
  • Set my profile photo visibility to my connections only
  • Turning off connection visibility so that nobody can go through my connections
  • Turning off my public profile visibility so that I cannot be discovered via search engines
  • Changing my last name visibility so that I show as "John S." instead of "John Smith" to users not already connected with me (this is an actual setting, no need to shorten your surname manually)

If the above still isn't adequate for you, then temporarily disabling the account might be your best bet. Personally, the connections/network I've accumulated makes it difficult to simply delete the account. Your primary issue seems to be people finding out where you work (random people, not so much industry colleagues right?) so if you do the above, nobody outside of LinkedIn can view your profile and even if they have an account, they won't see your photo, your email or your full surname.

For the most part, linkedin is a convenient way to remain connected to your contacts.  Other than that, I do not get much use out of it.  I have thought about shutting it down but not for privacy reasons. I am not that important to be worried about privacy issues, haha.

I mean, if you're in banking or have taken the series exam, there's BrokerCheck...
