Footy in NYC this summer

Basically I'm going to be interning this summer in NYC and had a couple questions on playing soccer in the city. I've never been to New York before (unless you count intervewing + layovers) so I'm not really sure how soccer works in a big city.

1) What is the best day to play? I'm aware that weekdays are probably a no go, but surely there has to be time on Saturda/Sunday? What time is generally the best time to play?

2) Are there any good soccer leagues to join? I've done research individually and came up with these: Gotham Soccer League, Zogsports, NYC footy, NYC soccer, NYC coed, Equal Sports project, Asphalt Green, and PSNYC. Does anyone have experience with any of these/recommend a particular one? Alternatively, is it better to just play pickup soccer (through using apps such as Meetup, Justplay, StreetFC).

3) Do we always have to pay for everything? Or are there just fields that you can walk up to and play pickup? (Side note can I also do this for basketball?)

Would really appreciate any insight
