Do rich people still have butlers?
And do they wear a tux? Or is that just in movies? edit: talking about America here. i realize that in 3rd world countries you can pay someone 5 cents to wake you up with a blowjob every day, but that's not what i'm talking about
Yes and I refer to him as Alfred, even though that's not his real name.
here in buenos aires some of the upper class have live-in full time maids/nannies/cooks and many houses/apartments you go to have maid's quarters which have been converted into something else.
Some do and it depends on what the person wants.
yes! and many of them are very cheap on treating the staff.
Outside of the U.S. is much more common. You can get a "butler" in India for $20K/year U.S., if not less.
We had an Indian born client who owned a gaming products manufacturer. It was their dream to sell their US based company and move back to India and have 3 or 4 servants. The dollar goes a long way in India. I think $20k/yr would allow you to employ 2 to 3 servants.
Yea, I know in the Middle East you can get a decent live-in maid for around $1,000/month if not less (depends on country, though, of course)
Well fvck me, I'm moving to India. Just for a year. I want to feel what the true pampered life feels like.
Most aren't considered 'butlers' anymore but more live-in staff. They get paid cheaply but have the advantage of free room and board. Prep school friend's family had a woman who lived in their guest house and would cook, clean, watch the young ones, and just generally help out.
I hope somebody is aware the difference between a butler and a "maid"
It's not as prevalent anymore. This was common in the days of the old rich, but these are the days of the new rich. The new rich didn't inherit their wealth, they work their ways up from the lower class or middle class. They are not spoiled so you are less likely to see them with butlers.
So there are only butlers in East Egg?
I've seen it. They're not called butlers, but sometimes there is a head of house, caretaker, etc... that manages the other staff, etc.
It's quite common in SE Asia, when I visited my girl's family in Singapore and Indonesia, every one of her relative's household had at least one maid and driver. It's actually rare NOT to have one or both, especially in Indonesia where there's plenty of cheap labor from the countryside, and not to mention the traffic in Jakarta is fucking horrible.
I only know one family w/ a butler. Really more of a housekeeper, and because the mother of the family got put in a wheelchair. Theyre billionaires though.
I think its a lot more common in like, hong kong, where theres a HUGE divide between the upper and lower classes and the ability of people to migrate to where the rich are so they can take jobs as live in butlers, whether they be the hong kong poor, thai or whatever.
Yeah Mainland China has a bunch of people with live-in maids, caretakers. There are a lot of people from the rural areas who come into the city looking for jobs, housing, etc. and being a live-in maid or caretaker is a plausible way to get both.
What I wonder about is if the rich have Eyes Wide Shut-style sex parties. I'm assuming my invitation was lost in the mail.
They have naked parties. And things like sex power god.
Most people I know have nannies, not butlers.
Having a nanny is really common in China. yeahright hit it spot on.
Maids are quite common in Asia especially in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. And you don't have to be particularly rich to hire one either.
Spent a lot of time living in SE Asia (China, India, South Korea). In India we had 3-4 live-in staff such as cleaner, general handiman, gardener, security guard. In other places it's quite common to have a cleaner and almost always a driver.
Rich people in the southwest USA hire illegal nannies/maids all the time.
I lived overseas in Asia for six years and my family had a live-in maid and driver. It's very common for expats in Asia to have the same (a live-in maid and driver). The company you work for will usually foot the bill (and even then, as others have mentioned, it's quite cheap).
Used to live in Dubai, almost every one of my friends families employed a housemaid/houseboy. From my experience, pay was around 1000 - 2000 AED/month, which translates to 250 - 550 USD. Then there were also gardeners, etc, but they were not employed by one single family but rather the landlord. Drivers were also very common.
So, to clarify: Nobody in the US uses butlers with tuxedos anymore. Not even old, established patricians on the UES or in Newport.
False, I have seen one butler.
