eSports in the 2024 Olympics?
I was scrolling through Business Insider and came across this article. The 2024 Olympics, which will most likely be held in Paris, could possibly be the start of eSports being recognized as a mainstream sport. The committee is considering this because of the drop in millennial viewership during the 2016 Olympics and is hoping to attain interest by adding things more appealing to this generation such as 3v3 basketball.
These are a couple other reasons why eSports being included in the Olympics could be a good thing for the viewership.
The eSports audience profile, its size, global reach, and demographic, psychographic, and behavioral attributes; the underlying factors driving its growth; why they are an attractive target for brands and broadcasters; and the significant audience and commercial crossover with traditional sports.eSports media broadcasters, including digital avant-garde like Twitch and YouTube, newer digital entrants like Facebook and traditional media outlets like Turner’s TBS Network, ESPN, and Canal Plus; their strategies and successes in this space; and the virtual reality opportunity.
eSports market economics, with a market sizing, growth forecasts, and regional analyses; an evaluation of the eSports spectacle and its revenue generators, some of which are idiosyncratic to this industry; strategic planning for brand marketers, with case studies; and an exploration of the infinite dynamism and immense potential of the eSports economy.
What are your thoughts on eSports being in the Olympics? How about 3v3 basketball?
Do you guys think that eSports could become bigger than current mainstream sports like american football?
Other comments?
The IOC has been making a mockery of the Games for years, adding more and more sports that have no place in the Olympics just to generate revenue. Golf, football (soccer), basketball, rugby and tennis are the least deserving - There are more important tournaments (Opens, World Cups, Grand Slams..) with large audiences.
eSports has even less reason to be in the Olympics than chess in my opinion, neither are physical activities, but at least chess could benefit from the larger viewership (as could eSports, but not to the same extent). If you look at the arguments you put forward (via quote), it's all about money.
3v3 basketball is an absolute must. idk why they didn't include it from the beginning tbh.
I think the reason millenials aren't watching the Olympics as much are because we don't have cable.
Stream it live through Youtube and I'll watch a good majority of it.
Yeah, that could be a good way to hit a bigger audience. IOC could also probably strike up some deal with Netflix or other streaming services; sort of like how Disney is starting its own Disney/ESPN branded streaming service to stream sports and kids shows/movies.
Disney owns ESPN.
Perhaps there'll be Flip cup added to the 2028 Olympics?
I played D1 in college but haven't flipped a cup in a few years, if this happens I might have to get training again.
Cue Rocky music, wearing a grey sweatsuit, and doing flip cup exercises at the top of the Philadelphia art museum stairs on a makeshift table set-up in the early morning hours.
how about breakdancing in the olympics?
There is something about the selection process for 3v3 basketball, the fact that any 3 people in the world could theoretically make it to the olympics, that is just awesome.
Are there any Olympic sports now dominated by Koreans?
South Korea's women's archery won its 8th gold medal at Rio. That's the only event that they have been consistent on.
