Favorite dive bar in New York

Like the subject says. Figured this would be a fun one for Friday afternoon.

Mine is Rudy's, for what it's worth. There's nothing better than a $5 whiskey and beer special plus a free hot dog.

Only had once but they're actually very good, not sure what time they close. Most of the time when I get there it's already shut down for the night.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

Manitoba's on Ave B is also a solid choice.

lol I used to live beside Manitobas

Mehanata near ludlow has a sub-zero freezer room with cold-war schemata consisting of a given soviet garb that must be put on at the door and unlimited vodka shots.

Desmond's.

Let's just say that I went to high school in the city, and before the bouncer started for the evening their carding policies back in the day would have given the compliance/anti-money laundering people fits.

If you're birth year is accurate, we may well have been there on the same Saturday once or twice.

Saturdays??

I come from a good catholic family. My parents were not prone to let me go out on weekends. Weekday evenings on the other hand...

Carry The Interest:
Are you thinking of Ace Bar? That's a solid choice. Also Sophie's on 5th but closer to Ave A than Ace bar is a good small spot with cheap booze and a pool table.

Yeah, Ace bar! Thats it.

Nice - I’m jealous

JJ Kinihans! Good location in Chelsea, not expensive and the atmosphere is chill.

Jimmy's corner - a boxing themed dive and one of the few remaining dives in Times Square. Jimmy passed away  from Covid but I'm glad the place reopened. It's an oasis in an otherwise terrible area.

Key bar in east village.. has that euro techno thing during night and some characters during the earlier hours. Atilla, the Hungarian owner will pour you some Hungarian moonshine if you ask.

Key bar is so underrated for when you’re trying to get after it (happy hour until 10 PM which I think includes 2-for-1 deals), also has such an eclectic crowd. Belle Reve in Tribeca is another interesting place - nothing would necessarily make you think it’s different than any other bar but it really runs the gamut on the crowd it draws (at least pre COVID)

For Brooklyn, beyond Union Pool I’d mention:

- Horse & Divorces (has a pool table)

- Cobra Club

- Pearl’s Social & Billy Club

- Carmelo’s (dangerously cheap drinks, also has pool tables on the 2nd floor)

- Double Windsor (beer bar, good stuff on draft and lowkey vibe)

- Hops Hill (same as Double Windsor)

- Lucky 13 Saloon (heavy metal bar, go-go dancers on the bar - bring singles)

- Brooklyn Inn (really cool architecture as it’s an old building from the 1800’s)
