Fine Art

Kinda feel like buying some art as a semi investment / personal enjoyment thing. Split between a smaller sketch / print by a respected master vs. an oil painting by an up and coming artist. How risky is buying art as a long term investment? I feel like it's really easy to lose money here so I don't want to spend a ton of money before diving in. Has anyone endeavored into this or at least know where I can find more info on it?

why dont u buy one of Damien hirst's next drops and hope he dies soon, if looking from a purely financial aspect. the art community think buying his work is blasphemy. not fine art by any means.

I also wanted to buy a nice piece a few years ago but couldn't get comfy with the price point. and when u realise the amount of fakes in circulation, I watched the doc below and it put me off.

I make and sell fine art. Although mainly I just build up inventory as I don’t sell quite often. I’d say it’s hard to invest in art as it is very illiquid. I have a couple of large abstract pieces that I would sell for $10K apiece

If you’re interested in oil pieces, you could just go to Blick’s and make your own. Oil is generally expensive. Good luck.

You really killed it with that series of abstract blues... I really like the way you capture the energy of the ocean feels like face of a wave that's about to peak.. I like them. I'd definitely hang the bottom 3 in my apartment.

Where do you find the time to paint, golf, tinder, WSO and work?   Do you have a separate room you use as a studio?

That's a lot of paint. Do you buy the jars and commit to using them in a single got?

I’ve got some art. It falls into different categories, just buying it because it looks nice and to hang on the wall (can be form anyone or anywhere- chances it’ll increase in value very unlikely)

If you want something that could be an investment best going to an dealership or art auction. Be careful art fraud is very common. Friend bought a painting from a dealership, turned out to be fake when back to dealership and they claimed they didn’t know haha. Do research and don’t feel rushed into buying by a dealer (these guys are great not as pushy as a car dealer, very subtle)

Best of luck.

I let one girl watch me paint and she said it was the hottest thing she has ever seen. She was a Cornell Law school grad who worked in corporate governance, but quit all that law stuff to become a wedding florist.

If it brings you pleasure to look at it, and you can reasonably afford it, buy it.

I don't think I'd buy any "alternative" investment in the hopes of appreciation.  You like wine?  Go buy some wine.  Maybe you never drink it, and it appreciates in value, and you sell it for a profit - but I would assume at purchase it's going to be consumed.  Same with art.  Or a watch.  You like it?  Buy it.  But the value you're getting for the price you pay is in the enjoyment of looking at it, not in the resale value - anything you get above 0 is a win.

It's been a while since your post, but I wanted to offer some insight. I’ve been diving into fine art lately, and I get the excitement. Lino printing is such a fun way to express creativity! If you want to start or add to your supplies, I found this great site with some awesome linocut kits. They have everything you might need to get going.
