First Person Shooters showdown
So are you guys more of the Call of Duty fanatics or the Battlefield advocates?
I know it's unfair to limit first person shooters to just 2 franchises and happy to hear memories of the Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake, etc fans but let's admit today these two pretty much run the show.
I personnaly prefer Battlefield. Larger maps, intense use of vehicles, more strategy and less skills overall (though this last item is debattable)
I like em both, for the reasons you stated. Sometimes you want the intense smooth & polished COD that feels like special forces, other times you want large scale Saving Private Ryan feel of Battlefield. You on PS3 or seXBOX?
PS3
I find Counter Strike: Source to be a good time waster that isn't for very serious players.
Theres also Medal of Honor but I'm not a big fan. I just watched the MW3 trailer and it looks pretty good (wall street is in the trailer). In sum, MW2 > BO.
real tournament and halo for xbox. never been a big game player, but those games were fun.
cool, add me hadrianviceroy...but i'm not that great
I've been all about COD since MW1 but I was way more into Battlefield back when I was in high school and had a desktop PC. Battlefield 3 looks absolutely nuts, I hope the PS3 version isn't too watered down.
P.S. Did anyone here ever play Tribes or Tribes 2?
TRIBES WAS INCREDIBLE!
Yeah Tribes was probably my favorite game ever. I joined a very serious clan as a flag capper when I was 13 but schoolwork got the best of me soon thereafter, much to my parent's relief.
Tribes was the shit, I thought they were coming out with a new MMO for it...
I started with CoD UA and BF1942. 1942 was a lot of fun, I'd say it beat the early CoDs. Vietnam wasn't bad. 2142 was meh. BC2 was siiiick, BF3 is going to be amazing, it looks like. The original CoDs (2/3, don't know about 1) were good. I had some issues with MW1, but overall decent. MW2 was solid, I liked it a lot and chose it over BC2 mainly because everyone I knew played it (made the move to console here due to limited time). BC2 was better gameplay though, I thought. BlOps was shit, so was WaW
Oh, I forgot HALO:
1: great 2: fking awesome 3: good Reach: not quite awesome, but better than 3, maybe on par with 1 (what 1 was at the time, that is)
Honestly MW and BF dont hold a candle to CS in terms of how popular they were. People still play CS in massive numbers, how many people still play MW1? But if you are into massive multiplayer FPS check out MAG for PS3 its sick, up to 256 players in a game at once and its objective based.
Correct. But I don't think BF tried to compte with CS per se. It's a completely different game play, with much larger maps and lots of vehicles to use. COD is closer from CS in terms of gameplay IMO.
Team Fortress Classic.
Counter-strike
On the funny side, anyone remembers Dark Forces? It was the first FPS which offered the ability to look up and down.
You all are forgetting the greatest FPS ever made. Goldeneye for n64
Amazing moments at the time. Multi (proximity mines!!) and solo (when those alarms would burst off and half the red army would turn up!)
+1
.
Shit, forgot CS and Dark Forces. CS series > all other series, but they haven't done anything of late. Dark Forces was sick, Outcast stole my life for a good while.
Top FPS (personal pref): 1. Goldeneye (Nintendo) 2. CS 1.6 (PC) 3. HALO 2 (XBOX) 4. BF1942 5. CoD MW2
socom 3 anyone?
CS 1.6... don't really play the new games and CSS sucks... how do you play that James?
I just play a round or two on occasion to kill time. It's not perfect but it will suffice for me.
CSS was fun to just jump in and play some GG or something. A lot of shitty players, a lot easier to dominate
Funny, this weekend I went to the movies and there was an ad for Duke Nukem Forever. This game has been under develoment for what, 10 years now?
http://duke.a-13.net/
This game has been underdevelopment for: -longer than iPods have existed -longer than the Vietnam War lasted -longer than the Beatles were together -longer to finish than the Suez Canal(by hand)
Battlefield 2 with the Project Reality mod installed makes BF2 one of the most played video games I own. I must have logged hundreds of mindless hours into that game. The ability to cooridinate an entire match makes it really exciting. I'm really looking forward to BF3, but with the current way they are showcasing this game it looks like it's becoming another COD installment rather than a true Battlefield, open world, do as you like, video game. Not to say I don't like video games that mimic michael bay movies, rather I was just hoping BF would stay at it's roots.
We'll see. I'm sure they're fully aware of what makes up their franchise. Besides I've always thought there was a big difference between the single player mode and multiplayer. The true differenciator is multiplayer IMO.
