FT: US reports more than 4,000 deaths in a day for the first time

Thoughts? Would love to hear from those who still believe we should open back up immediately when Japan declared a state of emergency, the UK went into another lockdown, new surges in some cities in China, South Korea... I mean even Sweden went into a partial lockdown.

I don’t have an answer for you, although I do think it’s very interesting that California’s cases per million is >1,000 with arguably the strictest lockdowns in the nation compared to Florida being 250-500 range. Don’t MS because of unsubstantiated claims that Florida is incorrectly reporting data. Source: https://covidtracking.com/data/charts/us-daily-positive-cases

Exactly. And we’re still seeing second waves and deaths in EU countries with strict lockdowns and mask compliance. Extended lockdowns were unscientific and not the way to go.

Idk but when I click the link for Jan 7's data, California is at 921 per MM and Florida is at 900 per MM. If you look at states like KY, IN, etc. they are over 1,000.

Good catch, I’m on mobile and it defaulted to a different day. Thank you for noticing that. I think the point still remains though right? One would expect Florida, with a large population of older people, to be in much worse shape than California, right? I understand it’s correlating things loosely, but I think there is a relationship, nonetheless.

If you zoom in on the state, you can see that cases are insane in LA (130 cases per 100k) and less stark in SF (42-43 per 100k) or SD (100 per 100k).

so SF’s outcomes are closer to NYC’s (40 per 100k) and way better than Miami county (80 per 100k).

It’s more nuanced than just looking at entire states and coming to conclusions. Again, not going to delve into the FL vs CA debate because I don’t give a shit but the numbers are what they are.

I totally agree man - I have not interest in arguing either. One thing that I think is undeniable, is that give the difference in restrictions, we were made to believe Florida would be multiple magnitudes worse. I don’t know what the right solution is, but we have two decent data points from some of the largest and most diverse states. I don’t live in Florida anymore, but grew up there, so maybe I’m biased... but my friends + family in Florida seem immensely happier than my friends + family in California, for what it’s worth.
