Gift for Grandfather (Bonus Spend)

Hi all,

I wanted to get a gift for my grandfather and would love the community's input.

As far as general guidelines go:

  • Budget is US$5,000
  • "Simple but timeless" is probably what I'm looking for (easier said than done); doesn't necessarily need to be functional

At the end of the day, just want to show my appreciation for everything by giving him a real solid gift.

I have a few ideas but thought I'd keep the discussion open ended. I welcome any and all suggestions.

Thanks everyone.

Edit: Thought I'd provide additional context to help focus the discussion. We are quite close and have always found time to dine out and celebrate special occasions. The gift I'm contemplating now is a different kind of gesture - it's materialistic, sure, but it's something he can hold onto for the rest of his life and forever celebrate its sentimental value (even if/when I'm not around).

Do personal rather than money.  My grandfather had a real thing for trains, Absolutely loved them (I still have most of his O-guage stuff in a light-up cabinet) Dad loves bikes, but honestly, how do you beat the 60s Schwinn Paramount track bike  and '84 Campion del Mundo Pinarello he has?

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.
