How important to live near firm (NYC) for consultants?
Was wondering if anyone has insight into whether it's helpful to live near your firm, since it seems you'll be working at client site or traveling a lot? I hear conflicting accounts and some people say you actually end up in the office enough that it's a factor. This is specifically for management consulting.
Ideally, you should move to a fun area strategically placed near the right subway stop to your work.
The alternative is to go as close to your work as possible, which might be favorable in heavy workweek jobs where you just need to pop back and forth to shower and change.
Pretty important as an Analyst.
My first year I lived a 25 min commute from the office, including subway. Then my second year I paid an extra $200 a month to move to live 10 mins walking from the office. Looking back, I would have paid a lot more. When you're consistently leaving work past/around midnight and have to be back by ~8:30am the next day, the extra 30-45 mins of sleep feels like a big difference.
Really depends on the job and specific desk that you have. IB and M&A for a top firm working 90+ hours. Yeah being near your job is crucial. Some job where you're leaving at 9 at the latest, probably not? Yeah location might not matter that much
