Huge Healthcare M&A Deal announced

It seems as if Amazon has its hands in every cookie jar, healthcare is only just one of those jars. Ever since Amazon acquired wholesale pharmacy licenses, the healthcare industry has been on high alert. One example of this is CVS (the drugstore giant) buying Aetna (one of the biggest health insurers) for $69 billion, now it looks like other healthcare focused companies are following suit. According to an article from NYTimes;

The health insurance giant Cigna said on Thursday that it had agreed to buy Express Scripts, the nation’s largest pharmacy benefit manager, in a $52 billion deal that could further reshape the roiling health care landscape.

The reason for this acquisition?

the acquisition would benefit consumers by allowing the two companies to bring together patients’ medical and pharmacy histories to improve treatments and lower costs.

One possible threat to this deal is the fact that after this there will be no large independent pharmacy managers left. Federal and state officials could potentially block this deal and the CVS-Aetna one.

For those that are heavily involved in the healthcare industry either because of work or a personal interest, what do you think about the future of the healthcare industry? With Tech companies disrupting multiple industries, will consolidation be the response of major players or do you believe that is not enough?

As a CEO disrupting the biotech, technology and professional services space - I think that synergistic mergers and acquisitions like this are too little too late. Blockchain, Machine Learning, AI, and computer programming will likely take over the healthcare space soon and I am excited to be a pioneering innovator in the field driving social change and value-added business solutions.
