I have no idea why people in the NE are always so freaked out about a Cat. 1 or tropical storm/depression. I mean really?

For what it's worth, the last time everyone around me had their panties in a bunch over a hurricaine, it was twenty years ago during Floyd. During that storm, a full size shipping barge washed up and stopped 200 feet from my house, and I don't live near the beach: the Army Corp of Engineers had to come and spend three months dismantling it. Normally, I'd agree with you, but in this specific case, I'm planning ahead just in case.

It's still better than living down south, where civilization gets leveled by some storm about every month or so.

Get busy living

I live in NC and we got a direct hit with Floyd. in '99 which was a Cat. 3. I admit Category 3's my family and I leave...hell during Fran we had an almost 13ft storm surge (our house was abut an inch above the water and we live where it made landfall) and our house got hit by a tree. But on the topics of weaker hurricanes, I went and played golf with my dad in 1996 (rode in the cart) during Bertha. I have an rocking videotape of Bonnie when Dad and I were outside. We have never had a window broken in a hurricane (no shutters/plywood), and lower grades (1 or storm/depression) is gonna not do much damage beyond power outages. Maybe some flooding, but nothing too serious. The storm surge is also slower during these weaker hurricanes, so its not like you're gonna get trapped. And Irene is gonna be 1 or lower when it hits NY/NJ/NE.

Hurricane bob caused upwards of 1.5B in damages in Mass. Just saying, property is actually worth something in the NE.

New York Harbor is known for being incredibly vulnerable to storm surges. It's a long, narrowing channel and during the 1938 Long Island Express hurricane that missed the harbor by about 20 miles, we got a 13 foot storm surge in Manhattan and Hoboken. This is enough to put much of lower Manhattan mid-town close to the river underwater, and more importantly, turn large parts of the subway system into a death trap as water floods in.

It looks like we are going to have a miss in New York and it is going to hit Long Island instead, but if it veers west and they order an evacuation, please do the smart thing and get to higher ground.

It's also smart to have a few days of water and food stocked up. Maybe along with a flashlight.

IlliniProgrammerBetween Hurricanes and Earthquakes, maybe someone is trying to tell New York something. I wonder if this is my cue to move back to Canaan- err, Illinois.

IP, wouldn't you be better off not buying the extra food and water and putting that money in an IRA or something? I mean think about it, a little extra comfort now or another $100k in 50 years? LOL.

Regards

Maybe Fran (96) or Bertha (96) or Bonnie (98). Needless to say my parents were not enthused about moving to NC in 95 to the city where most of these made landfall. lol

It's also worth pointing out that the storm surge will be relative to where the storm actually hits the body of water in question. Granted that the path it is traveling lends itself to some serious flooding in Manhattan but the forecasted track could very easily be off. It's possible that instead of surging and flooding the city, it could actually pull the water out of the harbor and practically leave it dry. Again, that's not likely to happen, but has occurred in other places.
