I wrote a simple short letter to him, telling him how much I looked up to him and for some reason he was willing to talk to me. I have not written anything outstanding about myself at all, in fact I am from the third world.

Focus less on what you want to learn from him and focus more on developing a future relationship with him and keeping in touch. One day he might be able to pull the strings for you in a certain area through his connections. Aka schmooze him.
Very cool! I always like asking about their biggest lessons they learned early in their career. Usually something they reflected on a lot and should give you an interesting answer.
