Immediate Hire vs. 2010 Analyst Class

I have recently received two independent offers from the same lower-end BB firm. Offer 1 is for a January start (I'm a Dec. 09 UGrad) in their Consumer/Healthcare group. Offer 2 is for the Summer 2010 start, group to be decided after "sell day"

Positives - Start getting paid earlier
- Gain 6months more experience than incoming 2010 class
- Work in Consumer/Healthcare group, which I am interested in

Negatives - Do not go through the 4 week Training program
- No real opportunity to meet/network with other 2010 analysts
- Cannot consider other groups (TMT, M&A are other interests)
- No real down-time between graduation and start of long hours

If I take the June offer over the Jan offer, I would like to study and take the GMAT since the score lasts 5 years and I will have ample time and concentration to do so. I would also plan on a 2month volunteering stint which I have explored for some time in Tibet. (All in efforts to buidl the B-School resume/app down the road)

Do you think it will hurt my reputation by politely declining the Jan offer to start work in the summer of 2010? Also, do you think the Consumer/Healthcare group would not consider me on "sell day" if I turn them down for the immediate hire?

Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!!

I know some people who started working in December but then went to training with the rest of the Analyst class in July. So you won't necessarily miss the opportunity to miss/network with your analyst class.

i have seen a number of people come in mid year and have had terrible experiences. people within the firm look down on these 'new' individuals. the training program is vitally important to your development. I would study for the GMAT and start with the 2010 class, without a doubt. PM me for more info.

Agreed - spoke with quite a few friends on the subject, universally recommend starting with your class.
