Personally don't like golf. But the value of getting a CEO/director/sponsor or anyone important to spend a few hours one on one in a very relaxed environment away from the buzz of an office or a conference room and other distractions is immense. You talk, brainstorm, get to know each other better and build trust.
It's like a lot of other things in life, you don't have to be top tier at it but you have to play the game.
Yeah - pretty sure every bank has some sort of budget or golf event for each coverage team or product group
Certainly a big thing in houston / energy at the senior level. Most banks reimburse country club memberships from what I’ve seen - typically the monthly dues.

Yes you can be absolute shit at the job but if you’re good at golf you will be fine. I don’t golf and I feel at a massive disadvantage to those who grew up doing it
I played golf in HS / College. Never has it once come up. Maybe bc I went from ER to HF and public markets are more meritocratic.
If you're better at Formula 1, you'll go further than if you're good at Golf.
