Letting Analysts Workout
Love hearing my fat coworkers complain that an analyst is at the gym from 6pm to 7pm.
People really take their corporate job more seriously than their physical body.
I don’t care if your bonus is 5g more, I’d rather not be obese.
Hero take
My analysts cover for me when I go to the gym.
I cover for my analysts when they go to the gym.
We aren’t dumb enough to go when we shouldn’t go.
Treating others like normal people in some ways ends up making life better for everyone involved.
Who would have thought? Quite a riveting idea.
Exactly how most of my deal teams work. Going to the gym and slamming a protein shake hardly takes more time than many lunches. Also, you might as well do something productive while waiting for comments instead of sitting at the desk pretending to work.
Lol. On my team people literally go in the middle of the day.
if only this was the standard. its only 1-1.5 hrs and makes a huge difference
not even that, can take 30 mins minimum
Perfectly fine in my view, as long as done responsibly
If every day there is a 1.5hr gym break and/or 1hr lunch break and/or 1hr dinner break, that is risky unless you are a top performer.
Surprised at being thrown so many monkey shits at this comment
I don’t see how the vast majority of people can expect to take 3.5hrs off a day as an analyst in an industry as demanding as banking without compromising quality delivery - unless one is extremely efficient or has limited staffing
Of course it happens - but it is a clear minority of times
I don’t understand what makes people so entitled to think they have the right to work in banking because xyz when they are not even willing to put in the effort they knew all along would be a part of the job. Prestige?
If one doesn’t want to do it upfront, why even pursuing it (vs a startup or corporate gig)?
I think you happen to be speaking fax Yung Monkey
This hits the nail on the head in my experience.
My frustration as an associate & VP was, I was the only normal gym person in the office . . everyone else was either out of shape completely or the gym rat going every day and then (to your point) making a big show of the dinner order and sometimes lunch too. Along with the protein shakes and so forth. Felt like a bit much when other people are grinding all day, and at least one person (me) was able to stay in shape without making it a whole lifestyle.
Not the protein shake!!!
You just enjoy the hazing ritual of having on demand humans at the ready 24/7.
If something needs to be turned and sent in 4 hours? Different story.
But normal work streams chip away? By all means.
As a long term intern, is it acceptable to do this?
As long as you don’t hide stuff, communicate proactively and deliver when and as needed, you should be fine. Also, as an intern you should try to go above and beyond if you want a return offer, which probably slims your chances of weekday workouts. If you managed to “get it all”, you are likely a top performer, getting lucky or missing the point.
Depends on the group you are in
Was fine in my group. I would recommend just talking to your direct boss about it. I asked mine if it'd be alright for me to go to the gym from 7-8pm everyday after a week or two of noticing a pattern of nothing to do in that window. I'd bring my phone with me in case a teams message came in (only happened once that I rushed out of the gym to email a file).
Ended up working out really well with clear communication. If something was more pressing he'd let me know beforehand, and if I submitted some work that he wouldn't get back to me in time he'd say I could go earlier.
Absolutely think that analysts should be able to go to the gym for an hour. Just give your teams a heads up
Honest question for those that consistently work out - do you guys have to make up for it on the back end of the night? If I work out on a typical night it ends up pushing back the time I finish working by however long my workout takes. Unless I wrap up before 9/10 or know I’m not getting comments for an hour or 2 during that part of the night, I can’t make it work.
What I have seen is that those who manage to do it either
- Are comfortable with delaying their bed time to 4am if needed
- Are lucky to work mostly with very chill teams, usually composed either of “hanging around” people who have lost motivation but are not sack material either; or control freaks who don’t delegate, freeing up analysts
- Cheat on staffing reporting
I’d describe “chill teams” as normal people who don’t power trip when an analyst steps out for an hour work out twice a week
.
The most productive part of my day is the couple hours after working out. It’s a net benefit to the team but the micromanaging in banking can be over the top at times.
Would be awesome if banks mandated a free hour of fitness time (let’s say it has to be after 6pm to minimize disruption or something) daily. Would literally change the game for us who otherwise sit on our asses for 17 hours straight
Completely agree and would boost productivity during a time when we’re otherwise doing what? Waiting for feedback? Why not put some time in the weight room/treadmill and get the blood pumping to get the mind working a little faster.

I worked at Reebok and they did this.
They'd also shut the lights off at like 7pm and if you were caught staying late that was a problem too
Idea was that it was supposed to be a health and fitness brand and they should live by their brand values
I thought that was pretty cool
Letting analysts work out is in a great reflection of culture imo
Not allowing employees (who are sitting on a chair 16+ hours a day) exercise for 1 hour to stay fit because “the work won’t get done” reeks of controlling, dehumanizing seniors
Sometimes its wild to think the type of sociopaths that work in this industry. God forbid people work 15 hours a day instead of 16
Who says "5g" instead of "5K"?
They're bankers. Their bonus is paid in units of cocaine obviously.
Who creates a WSO name with a profile pic and emojis?
Loser.
There is a story.
I would rather have an analyst be healthy and fulfilled than an extra hour of work. 6-7 is a nothing hour anyway. MDs and VPs are having dinner with their bitch wives they settled for and are dreading reviewing your terrible slides at 8. You’re not losing out on anything for them to work out for an hour. Better than jerking off in the bathroom

Spending long hours at the gym doesn't necessarily mean you're working out right tho.
The last thing I want is a fat fucking bullpen. Not only are they expected to lift, if they don’t increase their three primary lifts year over year while maintaining or decreasing their bf%, it’s going to negatively impact their bonus.
Based
Banking has to be one of the least efficient industries in the world where it is difficult for a junior to spend an hour away from computer after 7PM. Even if people don’t ’have an issue with it’ there are snakes in the grass.
